Hello,

On my last last range outing I encountered an intermittent trigger malfunction on one of my Ar's. The trigger disconnect catches the hammer upon cycling back, however does not release the hammer back to a cocked position once I release the trigger back forward. Takes some serious wiggling and dry cycling to get it to disconnect cleanly.

The malfunction occurred 3 times out of about 40 rounds - after that I put the rifle away until I could take a closer look at it back home.

Once home, I could not for the life of me replicate the malfunction while dry firing… I have done a lot of reading and see it is a common issue after some trigger installs, however most aren't intermittent and will occur on every cycle.

I took a few pictures to help show the issue - any thoughts of what might be causing this all of a sudden ? I have been issue free with this trigger assembly for about 500 rounds thus far.

This is how the disconnect malfunctions, even after the trigger is let go to reset

I cheated to replicate how the hammer is held by the disconnect even after the trigger is released below

This is how it should sit when released

Can anyone tell me if the disconnect spring should be installed with the large end up or down within the trigger ?

On a side note:
Does this appear to be abnormal hammer face wear ? - My other hammers do not show such distinct wear

Thanks for any input !

Could you do a trigger pull weight test? Everything looks assembled correctly. Does the trigger stay back on it's own your do you need to push it forward to reset?

The disconnect is correctly oriented. Check to ensure that you have a correct disconnect spring installed.

The hammer spring appears to have some set as well. It should be straight and not bent at the coils.

Not disconnecting could also be caused by a weak or incorrectly installed trigger spring, or some foreign object under the trigger preventing re-set. I've seen this caused by a popped primer - just the anvil portion working under there.

How many rounds through the lower?

How many rounds/cycles through the trigger?

I have seen similar issues with the following;

Debris in your lower causing malfunction.
Clean your rifle.

Worn or weak springs.
Instal a new spring kit.

Worn or damaged (or out of spec)disconnector or, hammer or trigger causing malfunction.
Replace out of spec parts with new parts or a drop in trigger assy.

Trigger holes not drilled straight through the lower or long use has elongated the hammer pin hole.
Install anti roll pin kit. It realigns the hammer and trigger pins in relation to each other. This is not optimal, but it does work till a new Lower can be sourced. The lower could be repaired, but only an experienced g-smith should attempt repair. Repair would likely cost 2-3x the cost of a stripped lower.

Those are the problems I have seen in relation to trigger reset in AR-15 rifles, I'm sure there are others...... There listed from easiest to repair to difficult/expensive.....
