Trigger for Winchester 70

I have acquired an older Win 70 push feed with a worn sear. The gun fires (with snap caps) by bumping the butt stock on the ground smartly. Not good, which is why I always thoroughly check a 'new' rifle before heading to the range with live ammo. I am wondering if anyone has a line on a sear, or if a new sear can be purchased from one of the site sponsors. Will I need a whole new trigger group?

The sear normally does not normally "wear" to the point of malfunctioning. While the sear and/or trigger may have been tinkered with, will adjusting the spring tension correct the problem?

Check the return spring first. In search of a lighter trigger people will reduce the pressure to nothing. I have trouble believing that the sear is worn that badly, but it may have been "worked on". Wasn't you, was it?

There is a pad in front of the trigger hook that can be stoned down to increase sear engagement, if you want to try to out-bubba Bubba.

I have had M-70's for 40 yrs. the triggers of that erra were very good and very adjustable, a worn out sear is highly improbable. No doubt in my mind a previous owner has been playing with the trigger adustments. Take it to your local gunsmith and get it set up to your liking.

No, Dogleg, wasn't me? I haven't had it apart yet. Just comparing it to a brand new MOA trigger group it appears (and feels) slightly rounded actually. Bubba may have been at it. I don't want to start stoning any surfaces, since only the very surface of these components is hardened. I will adjust the trigger pull weight, as suggested by others, and see what happens. I agree that sear 'wear' is improbable, so that would suggest that Bubba may have.....

The pad isn't subject to wear, so hardening, depth of, or lack of doesn't come into play. However sear engagement is unlikely to be the problem unless it was man-made.

Take it to a gunsmith for evaluation and repair. To a knowledgeable person it may be as simple as an adjustment, it may require some alteration, it may require a part. The safety can also be affected. It's doubtful you can do all of this at home.

I'm with Guntech on this one. If your not sure on how to repair it then take it to a gunsmith that can.
