Ive got a Model 700 and found out yesterday that my rifle goes off when I put my safty to fire, I can actually shoot the rifle just switching the safety.
It doesnt do this all the time, I actually just tried it today and it functioned fine. The trigger weight is very light, under 2 pounds, is this the problem or does it need adjusting of the sear engagement or what??

Cheers!!

if i remember correctly, there was a certain recall way back over this happening on certain 700's. A friend of mine put an 06 between my legs while hunting and ghe swore he just moved the safety to "safe".... never did like or trust safeties at all.

get it to a gunsmith asap

It needs the "what"... an informed "smith" to fix it... I can do it for $40 including the return mail. All I need is the complete trigger group... but any smith close to you should be able to as well.

From looking at a rifle with similar problem. The rifle would function normaly most of the time. If the trigger was "played" with while the gun was cocked and the safety engaed, it would go off when the safety was released. I figured that the sear had been released and the onlything holding the firing pin was the safety. So when the safety was switched off the firing pin would be released.

I have a Remington 22250 that had to be sent back to the factory as a recall. I never had a problem. In transit the stock was broke. They were not happy with my 2.75 pound trigger and it was returned with a 5. I had to re-bed and it will still shoot under an inch at 200 m. Oh . . . did I mention I had to redo the trigger.

doesn't sound like a stock trigger weight way too low compared to how they come from the factory. Sounds like it was adjusted by somebody after it was new. Can be done safely but you need to do a lot of drop tests etc- and the last instructions that I read on adjusting 700 triggers said that some cannot be made to go that low by adjustments only. ( a gun smith can do it- the recommended option- but it may involve stoning & polishing which is beyond my abilities at least and I suspect most people's) Read the link that Dogleg provided..
