Ok . The scenario , trigger locks on 1911 style pistols in cases . I bought a bunch of combo trigger locks on sale , of course , and the combo lock is too wide to fit in a crappy plastic pistol case .
So I used cable locks up the mag well and out thru action . Buddy says that leaving the action open like 3/8ths inch , opposed to fully closed rest position will ruin the action main spring over time .
I,m going to buy low profile trigger locks anyways . I didnt put much thot into it but I guess you can see his point if pistol is left action part way open ? Or is it a moot point

why would a spring be 100% ok in one position, and absolutely destroyed in a position 3/8 away, but in a position its meant to be in during cycling anyway? The ignorance about springs online is laughable. It's like saying it's bad for your car brakes if the tire spokes arent perfectly vertical when you turn the motor off.

ha:

What eventually wears springs out over time is working them (compressing then releasing them much like constantly bending and straightening out a wire). Springs left in one position constantly will not wear out - this has been proven time and again.

Your buddy is wrong! A cable lock is a perfectly acceptable way to lock a firearm.

Any spring can be subject to fatigue from repetitive motion, but if you think a spring, under tension for an extended period of time, will not become weaker... you are absolutely wrong.
If said spring '911 recoil spring' (which is under tension #### or de-cocked) would ever loose enough tension not to ignite the case primer... not sure it would happen in our life time.

I'm laughing, yet all my 1911's I set the hammers at half #### for storage. The thought of compressing the firing pin return spring for extended periods of time the concern. (Well, not at all a concern, but you know what I mean. It's just something I do.)

The spring is already under compression when the action is closed , so don't worry.
For show cases I just used those little plastic screw locks, 1-2$ each , at one time you could get 100 for about .49c each dealer
I made a smaller cheap screw driver to use on them, handy, the little flat disc is a pita.

The main spring in a 1911 is.... nowhere. There's a recoil spring and a hammer spring - in large springs. Mainsprings are in revolvers, and are flat. You're fine doing what you're doing, your buddy isn't as well advised as you are.
