There was a recent article from the CSSA that stored restricted have to be trigger locked. I have mine in a proper secure gun safe, stored unloaded but not trigger locked. Am I a criminal?

If you read the firearms act it says you can store it in a safe without a lock on it.
6. An individual may store a restricted firearm only if

(a) it is unloaded;

(b) it is

(i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device and stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into, or

(ii) stored in a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked; and

(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in

(i) a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into, or

(ii) a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked.

Mine are in a safe, not gun cabinet, trigger locked anyway. Trigger locks are not that hard to get through, neither are safes. Nothing worse than getting shot with your own gun, or anyone else's for that matter.

Check it out! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nBhOjWHbD6M

No blow torch or fancy tools.

Praise the Lord, pass the ammunition!

Cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into = Lock
Vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely = No Lock

One thing to be carefull of, is just because you call if a gun safe...doesn't make it a safe. The Stack-on gun "safes" at Canadian Tire are labeled as "Metal Gun Cabinet". They require a trigger lock.

Do not assume your "safe" is a safe.

I get the point the video is making...but who has a safe that big, sitting in the middle of an open room? Bolt that to the wall and/or floor and problem solved. Even not bolted to the floor, moving a full safe to somewhere you could tip it over (and have prying room) isn't going to be easy.

Not saying safes can't be broken into, but that 2 minutes was under perfect (and unrealistic) conditions.

stack-on makes both a "cabinet" and a "safe" and they are labelled accordingly

I use safes not steel cabinets and for ease of convenience most of my handguns are trigger locked as well. Not all though, there are a couple with no trigger locks, unloaded, on their shelves right beside the corresponding moon clip or mag. I usually take up to 6 handguns to the range a couple of times a month or more. I got tired of --take all the locks off, place in safe, lock the door. Open the door install the locks, pace in cases and go to range.

I think the confusion is that not all leos are big on the details of law and will make you're life difficult if they dont see a trigger lock.

The law says one thing, experience says another. I like leos to not be confused so I err on overkill. A calm and confident cop is a good cop. The courts would of course protect you in the end, but by that time I already consider it a loss. Im willing to suck up to ignorance for a modicum of peace.
