Just got one thing to say...20.5/IMR4195 pushing a Sierra 50 grain flat base spitzer. According to Alliants web site this is a tad hot but I feel they are rather conservative. 50 Sierra Blitz if you intend to shoot things other than paper.

All the early benchrest records were smashed with this load after Mike Walker developed the round in the early 1950's. 1:12 twist is fine. Lapua brass is available at about 70 cents per. Nice stuff, annealed and all but plain jane Remington brass at 35 cents per shoots .5 any day with my Sako Varmint.

A real accurate and economical round to load for high volume prairie dog/gopher shooters. 223 has a slight edge but not enough for me to bother re-chambering.

Think I said more than one thing! Good luck.

I've had very good results with the Speer TNT 50 gr and 21 gr of H322 or my old stand by with just about any 50 gr bullet and 19.5 gr of IMR 4198.
Have fun reloading and I have found that my rifle shoots better with the milder loads than the hot loads.

RE7 at 19 grs and a 50gr SX mystify gophers in a CIL 830.........It also liked Win 748 24gr and 55gr bullet............IMR 4198 worked nice too............Harold

50 grain SPSX shot well for me as well. Monkeyed around with 40 V-Max last fall with mixed results. Have not found the magic spot there yet. Did shoot some on prairie dogs last fall, very explosive results. The V-Max family are now available in 250 and 500 boxes which is great. Hornady bullets are also readily available in Canada whereas Sierra is sportatic at best.

Sierra's choice for hunting load 26.3 gr Win 748 and a 40 gr HP (#1385) gave me .25" and a wisker under in my Tikka T3 SV (1 in 14). I also had similar results with H335 and H322 with same bullet and Hornady 35 gr V-Max with the same powders. My rifle doesn't seem to like any bullet over 40 gr. I have some Barnes 36 gr V Grenades I want to try and I'm on the look out for a box of Berger 30 gr. Match Varmint. I doubt they will beat the combo of 40 gr Sie HP snd Win 748-H335.

:D I'm Ex-RCR (3rd, 3Cdo, and 1st)

thanks folks, got some excellent data to work with, the gun is a sporter CIL 900 , Anschutz with a 54 action, hope it shoots:dancingbanana:

I got myself a Kimber of Oregon 222 custom classic varmint just before Christmas and have done quite a few loads with Win 748 and Re 7. 20gr of re7 and the 40gr Btip gave me some nice groups. 322 and 3031 powders are supposed to work well .
Regards Greg

Nice gun!
I have a 1969 vintage 700 HB. 26.5 gr H-335 with a Hornady 40 gr V-Max and a Fed 205M, Rem brass. With neck sizing only after it has been fire formed in the gun, it will shoot between 0.3 and 0.4 inch 5 shot groups. I ran it over a chronograph but my notes are at home. Seem to remember 3450 fps but don't quote me on that.

Good luck. You will love the 222. I shoot them (this and a 788) way more than my 223.

My old Remington 788 seems to like a Hornady 50 gr. V Max moly over 24.0 gr. of Varget in Lapua brass with a definite preference for Remmy 7 1/2 primers. Generally a half MOA load.
