I am in the middle of buying my dream Spotting scope (Swarovski ATS 65) for Mtn. Hunts. So...

Those of you who have owned good tripods..... I'd like to hear your recommendations.

My Requirements:

1. As light as it is practically possible without sacrificing steadiness
2. Pack-in to a compact size
3. Have a Pan arm for scanning
4. Doesn't break the bank

Yours in good hunting,

Sheep1

My Requirements:

1. As light as it is practically possible without sacrificing steadiness This is up to you to determine what that balance is.
2. Pack-in to a compact size How small do you want?
3. Have a Pan arm for scanningUsually you buy a tripod and a head seperate to make a custom type setup, pan heads are easy to find for 100-200$
4. Doesn't break the bank

If you want, 1a, 1b, and 2... you will not get 4. For instance a carbon fiber Manfrotto with panhead is going to run you 500-800$, Gitzo will be the same maybe a little more. I bought a Milano Carbon Fiber Tripod with Head from London drugs to try. Its okay for 200$, but my spotter is pretty light.

Hey Sheep1,

Arcticcathonda gave you some good information. Tripods can get up there in price once you start getting into the lighter weight carbon fiber and features like that. One good option that we carry comes to mind that fits your criteria and that is the Vortex Summit SS-P. Its folded height is 14" and it weighs 2lbs, so it is super compact and light weight. It also has a pan arm and a quick release accessory plate. That one retails for $199.99. In terms of what we carry, that will be the lightest option available. If you would like to chat any further on the subject, please feel free to give me a call at 1-877-547-6873 and we can talk about some good options.
