I went out for a Monday morning glass, i have a little area cleared out on a hill an can sit there all day if needed, normally i do a 3-5 hour stint an normally see a couple fallow moving about.
It was really quite an after 2 hours of glassing i moved slightly across the hill to get a different veiw of a gulley face, After 20 minutes of that i spotted a few spottys an kept checking to see if a buck was around, no cigar.
Then I was about to call it a morning, when i decided to give it one last stand 50m back up the hill an see what happens.
thats when i seen this in the distance...
I wasnt in the most energetic mood, although i had nothing planned for the day, so i sat an ummed an arred as i glassed on this animal...
a little voice told me, 'what have you got to lose, a few hours? if its not big dont need to shoot it' an so then i planned a bit of a route to get 400meters away fairly quickly, as the stag was moving around a bit, an i last lost sight of it heading in my general direction.
I was up high an he was in the lower 1/3rd of the system, so the plan was really quite simple, stalk that way ->
I guess 20 minutes maybe less later an only being halfway to where i last seen the deer, i got a funny feeling an became 'on edge', sneaking one step at a time through blackboys an gum trees, pausing an listenin for anything... hoping to hear him rubbin a tree ... Dead quite with the odd bird cheep, another few steps an i paused, had movement below me, between the blackboys but i had a bush between an thought it was just a bird playing around in the bush.
I raised the rifle an couldnt make out anything, so the bird theory popped back in my head... i left the rifle up but moved my head around an had a look, thats when the Animal moved a whole step forward an i instantly looked down that Leopuld an straight away made out a Shoulder front leg and Rear legs.....
At 35meters I aimed smack on that things shoulder and let rip a 130gr Winchester Power Point .270Winchester round, pressed the trigger an let the Rifle bark, That animal didnt take another step!
I put 2 more insurance shots into it as ive seen big sambar run, an run for days.
I was shaking flat out an at that time wasnt quite sure of what i'd just done.
Heres a few photos
Bloody stoked!!!
Cheers
