Hi everybody.
Bought a new Rem. 597 VTR. Tried a variety of ammo through it and I'm getting some missfires. there is a mark left on rim from firing pin but no discharge. As soon as I clear the round one or two more will go off then it will happen again.
Anybody run into this same problem and what did you do to cure it?
Thanks

VTR troubles

One thread of many discussing the ups and downs of this firearm. My specific trouble and solution is quoted below. Since the repairs were done this gun has been working flawlessly.

When I purchased my 597VTR it wouldn't go through a full magazine without misfeeding, jamming or light striking half a dozen times or more. Absolute POS. Then I looked on Rimfire Central website and saw that the biggest issue with these guns is probably the overtightening of the guide rods (discussed earlier in this thread ( http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...ad.php?t=67177 ) I was going to do this myself but the other day I stopped by my local gunshop and was reminded that he is an authorized Remington warranty depot. Since I know my gunsmithy limits are easy met I left it in his capable hands. George refaced the breech, recut the chamber, recut the extractor groove, replaced the extractor, firing pin and two action springs. Lot of work for a brand new gun. As someone else mentioned earlier I hope their quality control has inproved.
Went to range today and went through 200 rounds of Federal bulk pack ammo and another 50 CCI Minimag stuff without one glitch. :ar15: Can even get 32 rounds in one of the two mags.:dancingbanana:

I found that with my base model 597 and 30rnd plastic mags that the bolt was dragging against the top of the mag and slowing the cycle down just enough to cause the bolt to stop a hair shy of battery. Try firing a mag off while manually pressing the bolt handle forward after every shot, if the FTF's stop happening you likely have your culprit.

I colored the tops of my mags with permanent marker and then manually cycled the bolt a number of times with the mags in the gun (followers removed to prevent bolt hold open from engaging). The marker was rubbed off the mag where it was contacting the bolt and transferred to the base of the bolt. Both surfaces were then worked over with files and sandpaper to eliminate the contact points.

Check to make sure the guide rod set screws are not over tightened. The rods can become distorted if over tightened and cause the bolt to drag/hang up.
