I just finished doing 8 coats of tru-Oil on my Marlin 336...and although it looks great, it`s a bit too shiny. The instructions say to apply the Stock Sheen & Conditioner to give it more of a satin look. All they tell you is to buff the cured stock with the SS & Conditioner.....but buff with what ?

After all this work, I`ll be pi$$ed if I screw it up now.

you can use shop towels with the sheen and conditioner or cotton Tshirt or buff it with a soft towel. either method will work. Should take down the shine but leave the depth in the finish.

What hicaliber said. I oil then use steel wool then oil again for about 3-4 coats. On the last steel wool buff use an old pair of nylon stockings to do a final buff. It will give a very natural dull shine.

OK ,so if I rub it down with 0000 steel wool or a Scotch Brite extra fine pad then rub it out with the S&S Conditioner and a cloth or buffing pad, this will give me the desired finish ? (that being semi-gloss-satin)

Yuo shouda cut it with Tung oil first. I mix it 2/3 truoil 1/3 tung. That gives a beautiful satin sheen. Or try rottenstone(pumice) as a last rub. You'll get alot a advice on this! JITC

I must say this is a timely post as I am in the same boat. I have 4 coats of true iol on and it keeps getting shinier with each coat. I am buffing between coats with extra-fine scotch brite. How many coats of oil should I put on?

tru oil

Try something like Birchwood Casey stock sheen and conditioner.. It works like a fine cutting compound to gently remove the sheen to the desired hand rubbed finish..

How about an update?
Did it work the way you wanted it to?

Ok.....so I buffed the stocks down with the 3M extra fine pad to a flat finish (made sure the finish was even) then applied the Stock Sheen and used a 3M white buffing pad and buffed it out in out (also broke a sweat while doing so)
the result was very favourable, nice and smooth and more of a semi-gloss/satin.

I am very pleased !

Thankyou all.
