What would make a good truck gun? Open sights? Detachable magazine or not? Lever action or bolt? Single shot? What do you guys think?

Likely something big, shooting solids. You were not specific on what kind of truck, something liek a pickup would likely succumb to a 338 win mag to the block, but the bigger (5 ton plus) type units might require something with military heritage, ie 50 Cal or 20 mm

It all depends on how far a shot you expect to take when you step out of your truck and how long you expect to make it. Something close in where the shot may need to be taken quickly, a good detachable magazine fed rifle with irons would work well (L.E. No5 MkI or BLR with irons would work well). If the shot was over a field and you had time to make it, a non detachable magazine fed bolt with a scope wiould work well also.

Is the gun going to beat around behind the seat? I assume this is the case; a Stevens or Savage would work well for a cheap beater that shoots well that you do not care if it gets dinged up.

I can never get drawn for truck season.

I wouldn't care if the gun gets beat up, I was thinking of a savage 99 in 308 with a detach mag. That or a BLR in 308. Of course these would not have to be minty. Also thinking of stevens line, but have had feeding problems with every savage bolt I've owned. There's a pile of wolves around where I work so i was thinking it might be a good idea to start packing one in the pick-up, just in case.

Try a Ruger Frontier in 358 Win, 16 1/2" bbl., tough finish, very accurate, two choices for scope placement.
It points more like a lead pipe than a rifle but really handy to carry on the quad or in the truck. :D

i belive he was talking about a gun for hunting with from his TRUCK not a gun for taking out trucks:shotgun:
i kno for a fact theres no 4x4 chevy season up here:eek:

The truck gun is typified by the Lee Enfield. The peep sight and front post is nearly indistructable, and I recall I used to be able to do some pretty decent shooting with the battle sight on mine, before such things became known as ghost-rings. It retains its magazine firmly and is the one DBM rifle that you don't have to worry about loosing the magazine for while carrying the rifle in the bush. While I don't favour the baba'ed rifles, an as issued #5 would be hard to beat for this duty.

They should have a season on Ford mustangs though. The new ones are everywhere and travel in herds - not unlike the mule deer, or Pontiac Sunfire. Parking pretty much sideways, taking up two spots. With out a doubt falls under the definition of "Problem wanna be wild life".

A 16 ga shotgun with an assortment of shells rolling around the glove compartment is my choice.

I keep my Mossberg 195 Bolt action 12gauge ready to go right behind my seat with its magazine with X2 Super Magnum 00 Buckshot in my glove box with a 5 round slip on shell holder with 5 X2 00's ready to go with the gun.

I keep this in an S10 reg cab with a big ass subbox in it lol.

Hum...Dare I say it, what about an SKS?:dancingbanana: Keep a few stripper clips in the glove box and you are in business. You certainly won't have to worry about scratches and dents;)

This little guy gets ride along duty when I go for a spin to the hills or fishing 'just because.'
