Truck shotgun Care

So I already know all the legalities when it comes to a truck gun. What I am wondering is how can I best care for a truck shotgun.

Im looking for answers to a couple different questions:

1. How often should I remove it from the truck to clean and re oil it to prevent rusting(I am in Alberta so it fairly dry)?

2. What oil/grease would be best so that it preserves the firearm well but still will allow it to function well without removing it?

3. Will keeping it in a case really provide that much more protection from rust?

BTW it will be a plain old blued shotgun. Also are there other things I should be thinking of when it comes to rust prevention?

Thanks for the help!

Get a silicon impregnated gun sock to store it in. I had Mossberg .410 live in one for a whole summer with nary a speck of rust in sight. I did wipe the gun down with oil before putting it in the sock the first time.

Yep, a good wipe with any decent oil (I use Break Free) every month or so, put a good sock on it and you'll have no worries. Don't put it in a case of any kind though...that will actually promote rust formation.

I have a remington 870 express as my truck gun and it has lived under the back seat of my truck for the last 8 months. I have taken it out a bunch of times to use it but I have only cleaned/ oiled it 3 times. Shockingly it has not rusted into oblivion like many would have you believe.

Like I said, I've taken it out and did a total cleaning, barrel and internals like you normally would after a shooting outing. Then I gave it a light coating of hoppes oil over all the parts, wiped it down with a paper towel and put it back under the seat. Anything more I can't think of and would probably be excessive, regular gun oil should be fine.
