I have had good results with Minwax Tung Oil Finish. Like Tru Oil, it goes on pretty shiny, but you can use steel wool on it to get more of a satin finish.

Watco Danish Oil is another similar product that is commonly used for gunstock finishing.

I used Varathane natural oil or some such name and it wouldn't dry after at least
24 hours.
And given the climatic temperatures here in the last couple of weeks.
I have great faith in the Min Wax products and continually use them.

Flecto-Varathane Number 66 Oil Finish is similar to Tru-Oil. Windsor Plywood and other hardware stores carry it. You can also add a little Japan Dryer to speed it up.

Track of the Wolf will ship T-O to Canada and they also sell Permalyn which I have just tied and seems to be a big step ahead of T-O. T-O dries great if you live in AZ and it's summer. I don't live there. Permalyn really does dry to recoat in 3 hours in the Ottawa humidity.

Any idea why Tru-Oil is no longer available? I have heard that raw Linseed Oil (boiled as well) is a carcinogen...but what isn't today. I believe Tru-Oil's largest component is Linseed Oil...

I spoke with B-C about T-O and they didn't say exactly why but expected to be shipping to Canada again any time now. Apparently it was a Health Canada thing so probably labelling.

Never heard of this?
What is it and where does one find it?
The Varathane oil did a nice job, but the stickie I
couldn't deal with.
Old product maybe and the drying agents dispersed?

true oil

good day and thankyou for all your replies.
unfortunately it is true.i spent 5 hrs today driving, trying to find 1 bottle of true oil to finish up a highly figured savage 340 stock that i've been working on.i went to london, chatham blenhiem and there was none to be found.
i talked to a couple of the local gs owners, and it was the same answer.
there will be no birchwood casey products shipped to canada untill they change the labelling.
so what we have left within our borders is all we have or will have for a while.
the local gunshops havn't been able to order it for almost a year.

luckily a buddy had half a bottle left and gave it to me to finish my project.

thanks again

I think it is the addatives more than the linseed oil that are bad for you. Raw linseed oil is simply "non food grade" flax seed oil... which i drink for omega 3's & 6's. Boiled linseed oil is no longer true "boiled linseed oil" anymore, rather it is chemically altered with resins and dryers to mimic real BLO. Real BLO can still be found though at craft places like "Michaels" et al.

I use circa 1850 Tung oil mixed with Japan Dryer also. I find the JD not only speeds up dry time, but also makes the finish a bit harder.

I gave up looking here in Canada bought some off Ebay shipped to Canada no problem, it was only $10 if customs seized it no biggie

Thanks for the Japan Dryer replies.
Now, do you just mix up a small quantity or mix it in
the tin/jar/can of product you are using?
This has caught my curiosity as I did like the finish
the Varathane oil gave me, but not the tackiness.
