True or false.. for mid range shooting, you don't really need to go more than x4...

.. for a non-target rifle.

I have some semi-autos that aren't precise enough to bother with a high magnification. I currently have 1-4 scopes on them. On my target rifle I have a 3-9 on them because it makes sense. Since my semi-autos are 2-3 MOA rifles, is there any point getting high magnification if I'm shooting 300 yards or less?

I figure you only need higher magnification if you're taking long-range shots, or if they're target rifles.

What do you think? I'm thinking about this from a budget perspective. I could get a 1-6.5 scope but it would cost double my 1-4 scope, and I'm looking for someone to reason with my greed. I don't think I need x6.5 scope, it's just a luxury. Can someone talk some sense into me?

Thanks!

Anything past 200yds i wish I had more. (I run 4x)
I use a 3-9 on my hunting rigs... But with that said, 90% of my shots are on 3x because I forget to crank up
IMHO 4x is perfect for a HUNTING rifle. (I almost never shoot past 300yds)
I think your assement is bang on and you don't need the extra zoom for twice the $$.
On a long range/target rifle obviously the bigger the better.

I used to use a fixed 4x Weaver on an old 700ADL in 270. It was fine for deer out to 300 yards or so. The only time I ever regretted having it was when a large buck popped out at less than 15 yards. All I could see was brown. Managed to line up a shot and get him but it was definitely a panic moment.
I use mainly 3-9x now, but it's mostly due to easy availability and good sale prices.

I think you're on the mark. More mag or rather a greater range of magnification is always nice but you're not handicapped by sticking with a 1-4x.

I ran a 4X fixed Leupold on my hunting rifle for a few years. It worked just fine in the field, farthest shot I made with it was 230 yds on a 4-point Muley buck...I never felt lacking in magnification. Load development at the bench, however, left me wanting more.

The real question should be why choose a fixed power over a quality variable in the first place? Unless your rifle is a big bore thumper modern day variables are tough, trim and offer decent eye-relief, no reason to limit yourself to a fixed 4X or 6x.

4x is probably perfect for a non-target rifle. Many of the fixed scopes on tac rifles are of the 4x variety, a la US military ACOG; and the CF Elcan is 3.4x. Enough to bring a 300m shot in to make it on the paper, but not too much to overpower a 15m shot.

Quick question: if you were to splurge on a 1-6.5 optic, would you put it on a 223 semi or a 308 semi? Can't afford to do both.

The 223 is a sporting rifle, eg 3 gun, and the 308 is my general purpose and could become a hunting rifle too. So there's pros and cons to having it on either.

Picatinny rail on both rifles and swap it back and forth with QD rings.

Problem solved.
