Try it before you buy it?

Im new to the sport of shooting and I have yet to buy my first handgun. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a gun shop that allows you to test fire a firearm before purchase. Specifically Im looking to buy a Beretta 92FS because of the large slide stop is easy to manipulate and because the striations in the slide are deep and easy to hold on to (read "wont slip out of my hand as I fumble with a small slide stop" ).

I live in the Hamilton/Burlington/Mississauga area but don't mind traveling around to a shop thats not too far away. I just dont want to get to the range and find that a gun that I thought I would love is actually something I can't stand to fire.

P.S.
Ive tried a few other handguns, specifically the Glocks and the Sigs and I find that the striations are too shallow to hold onto and the slide locks are a pain to fumble with (something I dont want to deal with on the range when I need to safety my firearm). If anyone has any thoughts on any other 9mm with deep striations and a large slide stop I'd be very interested.

Do you know if they will charge you for it? I would feel better if they did charge me because then I wouldn't feel obligated to buy right then and there if I did like it ...Im odd that way : )

I went to the states last week but you need to be a resident of New York State to handle handguns ....but they let me fire an AK-47.....I still dont understand that one

I think the best way is join a gun club first and you can try more gun before you go buy one. You can ask many many questions about the gun and I believe they will give you a true answer while a gun store may not do so.
Anyhow a 92F is a great choice of pistol.

"...dont understand that one..." It's New York. The State gun laws are daft.
While it wouldn't hurt to give Shooter's Choice a call(519-746-8139 or ed@shooterschoice.com) and ask, I don't think any gun shop will let you shoot a brand new firearm just to see if you like it. Makes it a used gun even if it never left the shop.
"...fumble with..." They both lock open after the last shot. Otherwise use both hands. I find Glocks are too smooth as well. Easily fixed with a slip on rubber grip from Pachmayr. Mind you, if the thing doesn't fit your hand to start with or you just don't like it, the grip won't matter.
Your best bet o fire a few pistols would be to hook up with one of the guys here for a range visit. Most shooters will do this, especially if you bring your own factory ammo.

if you live in Hamilton, try coming out to the Wentworth club Thur evening, they have an IPSC practice night then. Find some of the organizers, introduce yourself, and ask if anyone might let you handle their guns. I'm sure people would let you; you would not get a chance to shoot them, but definitely handle.

I'll be there sometime shortly after 8pm, this Thursday

will you really want or need a safety for simple range shooting?

btw like most things, you can get bigger than stock slide stops for Glocks and other guns. I think if size is an issue you might not be happy with the 92fs.

hey Omen what is your home club? I heard you shoot WSS alot on practice night?

A tried gun is then a used gun...

Sorry I did mean trying a used gun, I wouldnt expect that any store would allow you to test fire a new one, that would be like getting some after market parts for your car...trying them for a few months and then taking them back because you dont like them...although Ive seen some places that Ive worked at accomidate this.....stupid canadian tire

Thanks for all your help guys I think I will check out the Hamilton gun range and see what I can see or check out that place in the states. Im not sure about what kind of laws Michigan has though : )

No I dont really need a gun that has a safety ( I do like the decock lever on the 92FS though) but I do need to be able to lock the slide open easly when a cease fire is called on the range. The slide lock on the 92FS is easy for me to handle.
