Trying to decide on a 300 win mag

I am currently in the market for a 300 winmag. Not hunting, just steel and paper use. I don't need a 300 but I want one. I handload for all my rifles. Here are the 3 I am considering.

Remington 700 5r milspec
Savage 110 fcp hs precision
Tikka t3 hb varmint

I already own a savage fcp-sr and a remington 700 5R milspec in 223. I am really leaning towards the tikka but I am hoping someone with experience with any of these chambered in 300 win mag can provide some experience and insight. Thanks.

I have a t3 Lite in 300 Wm and the magazine isn't as long as I would like. Not the greatest for vlds as it limits your oal. I like the gun and still got it to shoot 168 Berger vlds though. I highly recommend a limb saver. Other than that my basic tikka is a great gun. Nice trigger, smooth action, and pretty accurate.

I have two rem 700 300 win mags, 5r and a police. They both shoot great yet the police is less expensive. That would be my vote. Spend the saved $$ on a nightforce or equivalent.

I really like my 5r and had my mind pretty set on one in 300 but I handled the tikka and other than the stock I really liked the feel. I have read OAL is an issue in the tikka but I mainly single feed.

Of the three you mentioned
Tikka , hands down
Rem
Savage
Just my opinion , lol, none of my Remington's have ever come close! to the accuracy of my Tikkas. My Rem trigger was brutal compared to my Tikkas. Have Timneys on my Remington's . Tikka varmint stock ain't the best. If you single feed for paper and steel no problems. My Varmint shot the 208 Amax very well and was still able to mag feed. lots of upgrades for Tikka now too although you don't really have to in my opinion. Don't even ask how my Salvage shot, it was embarrassing

I have a Tikka Tactical in 300 Win Mag. 208gr A Maxes run 2955fps and < 1" 5 shot group at 200 meters. It has a Yo Dave trigger spring set at 1.1 lb and a s/s recoil lug. Hand loads are the best I can produce with all the tricks.

My savage and remington both shoot far better than me with my hand loads. I am happy enough with both that I wouldn't question buying another of each butI just can't shake the need to try the tikka.

I am surprised at the recommendations leaning towards remington over tikka. While I appreciate people directing me towards a rifle, reasoning would be appreciated

My apologies - I assumed as you were so specific as to what you were considering that you'd already done more homework. Allow me to elaborate on my previous answer: I am NOT recommending Remington over Tikka, I am recommending the Remington R5 over the Tikka (and pretty much any other factory rifle out there). Every R5 I've seen prints in the .6 or .7 range and some in the .5's which, if you do any research at all, are excellent numbers ( please ignore the internet blowhards who consistently shoot 1/4 minute out of whatever - it ain't true ).

Now to generalize, the Tikka's are overall smoother and usually have a better barrel than Remington rifles and the Tikka may, indeed, be smoother than the R5 but the R5 barrels are hard to beat.

I've owned and used three .300wm rifles in the last 6 months:

Tikka Tactical - replaced plastic stock and plastic shroud and installed a Pepper Laminate, replaced bolt handle and added TRG brake

Rem 700 XCR II - Replaced A3 with A5 and installed Timney 510 and Grizzly Brake

Rem 700P - bone stock and unmodified

Of the three, the 700P prints the best groups and yet I'd swap it in a heartbeat for a R5. My only critique of the R5 is that the HS P stock is 1/4" shorter in the grip than the HS P on the 700P which means for me that I always replace.

Hopefully this gives you something approaching the more fulsome answer you were looking for.

Thanks for elaborating. I have read a lot on the 5r obviously as I have one. I guess I should start seeing what is available. I can get the tikka locally but no 5r to be found even from some sponsors

I love my tikka T3 lite, trigger feels really nice and the gun is accurate....down side is it kicks like a mile but with a heavier stock and/or a brake might not be a bad range gun.. I have not shot the Remington and I'm not a fan of the acutrigger on my savage

I use a tikka tac 300wm with a TRG brake and factory stock. It does all I need it to. shoots both factory ammo and reloads sub moa. What I like about it most is it uses a TRG barrel which are among some of the best for shooting a wide variety of ammo accurately. Trigger could be lighter and stock could be better, however it shoots plenty good enough for me. I have had many other rifles, downsized and kept this one, as for the money it gives me the value I am looking for. Sorry can't compare to the R5 as I haven't shot an R5. I stick with Tikka as all off the barrels seem to be the same, I found with savages and remington, you may get one that shoots better than a custom or you may not, it seems to matter when the barrel was made, and who mated it to the action, not so with the Tikka's. More consistency in the Tikkas..... that has been my experience.
