trying to find a good load for a browning 300wsm

300 wsm load
My 300 wsm REALLY likes:
Winchester brass
Federal large magnum match primers
65.5gr IMR 4831 powder
Hornady 180gr SST or Interbonds.
Start a little lower and work up to it as this load is fine in MY rifle.

Def a max load, it may be too hot for many rifles.
I would start at 62 or 63gr and go up in 1 grain steps and see where you get the best groups.
Any reason why you want to use 180's? I have had great luck (both accuracy and on game) with the 165gr tsx and accubond in my wsm. Oddly enough my rifle likes the same powder charge with the 165's, only the tsx 0.050" from the lands.

LongBomber - What kind of velocities are you getting with that load (3082 fps is the listed max velocity for that bullet weight).
I've been keeping track of "pet loads" posted on various forums and here is a basic summary of what I've found: Overall, it seems the top 3 powders for 180's are H4350, IMR4350, and IMR4831 (H4831 also gets a notable # of recommendations)
H4350 - 64.0 g, 180 NosPT (60% posts using this bullet - 63.5 was the lowest, the 65.0 was the highest, but this was with 180 NosPT CT (I think it had lubalox or Moly coting and it is no longer made). That said 63.5-64.0 seems to be the most common H4350 load with this bullet wieght.
IMR4831 - 65.5 g, (75% posts with this combo180 NosAB)
IMR4350 - 50% of post using this powder listed 64.0 g - range was 63.5-64.5g (data for a variety of bullets - seems the sweet spot will fall in this narrow range).
There are a growing number of RL17 recommendations, but they are extremely variable (i.e., large range of charge recommendations). As such, I personally would wait until more published data appears (to my knowledge, only Speer Deepcurl and Alliant are the only ones who have published RL17 loads for 180 grains). The new Hornady 8 manual does not list this powder for the 300 WSM.
LongBomber touches on an important point - must of the pet loads I have come across lately are for 165/168 grain bullets - perhaps this is "the" bullet weight for the .300 WSM. If a mono-metal, 165s/168s will be adequate for any non-dangerous game in North America (according to John Barness).

BearClan - I get about 2970fps from a 24" barrel with that load. Plenty fast for me, I stick to what is the most accurate load I can make, and let speed come second.
Barqs11 - What 165gr bullet did you use? One of the TSX/TTSX or a regular copper/lead? I am always curious to hear about bullet performance.
