Ok, so my buddy at work has decided to get into hunting dear. He's waiting for the next firearms course to begin to get his license and in the mean time he's looking for a firearm. Not buying, but browsing to see what he's going to pay and how he can get one. I've already told him that CGN is a great place to start, and a means to find companies that could sell him a firearm. So here it goes, he's looking to hunt dear. He's got it in his head to own a 30-30 Lever action or 30-06. Definitely a lever action if possible, scope/not scoped isn't an issue. He's been on the Cabala's website and says he can buy one there for $500. As I'm not a hunter nor am into hunter firearms, I have no idea where I should steer him/suggest to him. Does anyone have any ideas about firearms he should be looking at/ places to go to?

Marlin 336 - can be found new for around $450 + tax! It is a side ejecting action, wheras the Winchesters are top eject making it hard to mount a scope! The Marlin 336 will come tapped ready for a scope! I have one, and just picked up a fixed 4x scope for it and it is perfect!

You could also suggest that he look at the Browning BLR. Can be scoped, comes in a number of calibers and has the convenience of a box magazine.

^^^^ :D

In all seriousness though, he's looking for a Marlin 336 in 30-30, a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 or if he really has his heart set on a 30-06, go for a Browning BLR. I know that Mossberg is making a lever action rifle now but i havn't really heard anything good about them so i can't advise getting that.

Ahhh...but if he found a winchester AE model he could mount a scope on it...;) Nice classic looking lever gun with a fine finish and old time grace.w:h:

Check out some of the dealers up top..they just might have what he wants...

x2 on the BLR. I've seen plenty in .308, .270 for around 700 bucks. The 30-30 is nice for nostalgic, historical reasons, but a .308 would serve him well for a much larger range of game and hunting situations.

I have a newer Savage 99c in 308 that is a sweet rifle. Detatch mag so ideal truck gun too. Handles like any other lever. Another choice.

If he's in St Margarets Bay area, go over to Kelvin's Taxidermy in Chester. He's got a bunch of nice lever guns, savages marlins and wins and his prices are much lower than anything i've seen on EE.

He had a 1952 336SC in .35 Rem, mint condition for $250 a week ago, but it's sold :)
