Trying to pick a Savage .308

I'm having some issues here. I've basically established I'd like to get a Savage .308 because they seem to be the most accurate out of the box. I'm a fan of Remington 700's but for now I'm looking for Savage.

So I saw the Savage 10 TR. 20" heavy threaded barrel, detachable box mag, rail, accu-trigger, accu-stock and for about $700 tax and shipping included.

Now, I've heard the 10 TR is a bit ####y because the mag release is in front of the mag rather than behind it. So most aftermarket stocks won't necessarily work. In the future I'd be interested in either the AICS or some other tacticool stock. I've always liked the AICS though... not sure if it'd be an option

Benefit of the 10 TR is for about $1500 I can get the rifle and glass and be on my way for a while.

So then I was looking at a few others but they're all coming in at $1300 plus.

Here's my wish list:

20" heavy threaded barrel
accu-trigger
detachable box mag
accu-stock is a plus but not necessarily a deal breaker for now.

Looking for any type of feedback. Thanks!

My advice go with what you can afford without breaking your bank account & get shooting. You can always upgrade later on such as barrel, stock, mag release's etc.. You can't go wrong with a Savage,, my model 12's will shoot with my 2 long range custom rifle's.

Cheer's & play safe...

I second that. You can change little things like the barrel and stock later. Sucks that you have a stock restriction tho...

Get the 20 inch 10TR and the best glass you can afford... that said, i can afford better and yet i went with a simple Bushnell 10x40 on this one as the goal was to both pack it on a dirtbike and use it for hunting. I couldnt be happier, and its my go to for most occasions these days as its just a lot of fun. Its not a beater by any means, but if it takes a hit i dont mind.. thats why i love it.

The supplied 0-moa rail is good. You'll probably max out on elevation going for distance. I typically shoot under 700m as thats what my spots permit, but im no stranger to holdover so ive gone farther with no problems.

The accustock and mag release location are great for an out of the box rifle. You don't really need a larger mag, and you'll probably end up single feeding anyways to avoid mag changes all together. Just mount your bipod on the rear swivel and use the front as an anchor point to prevent it shifting position. The accutriģger is very good.

I don't think a 308 needs a brake, but since it has a threaded barrel I got one for the hell of it and it does help to spot your splash on longer shots.

Get one, you won't be disappointed!

We all have budgets so I understand constraints myself. I have a Savage 10 FCP McMillan in .308 and I think that it's a great gun. A fellow was selling a nice looking used one on EE for $1000 a while back.

Seems like the guys who picked up the 10TR's are happy with their choice, so I don't think you can really go wrong there.

If you are set on adding a aftermarket stock down the road may I make a suggestion? The savage hog hunter line has model 11 actions with the top bolt release, accutrigger and a medium heavy threaded barrel. Removable iron sights. They come with a flimsy stock and a internal mag. I bought one in .308 and put it into a mdt ls stock, and the rifle has been way better than me. Had plans on swapping the barrel out to .260, but it shoots so well with handloads that I'm just gonna stick with .308. I liked it so much that I bought another in .223 as a varmint gun. Both have been excellent. And the nice part is, they go for around $500 or so, considering the action and accutrigger I feel like its a good deal, especially if you plan to swap out the stock. The top bolt release will make finding a stock easier as well.

Let us know what you come up with. :)

*edit would like to add that if your budget is $1500, then I would try and spend as much of that as possible on your glass. A hog hunter with a lss stock and all the trimmings is going to come out to a solid $1000, at this point if your budget is firm I would take a harder look at the TR and save some cash for your scope.

To the original OP: Its not the mag release that limits the stock options, its the bottom bolt release. On most new savages it is in front of the trigger guard. Just as it is on a TR. If a aluminum chassis is your thing, then I would advise picking the one that you want and make sure you buy the rifle with the action that will fit
( ...why? If you put the money into optics instead of a chassis you would be better off. Hell for the price of some of these chassis, you could get a prefit barrel installed and be miles ahead in performance. my2C)

There is a model 10 FCP-K on the EE now that might fit your needs and seems to be reasonably priced. I just bought one in 223 and it has the metal detachable mag not the plastic.

I was shooting with a buddy who just picked up a Savage 10 TR and it is a very nice shooter. He was getting sub moa at 200 yards using 150gr loads from my setup (Tikka t3). I'd be happy with with a 10 TR. The only funky thing we encountered a HUUUGE POI shift when we put a muzzle break on. It was way high and left, so high it was off the target/backing. We guessed probably a 10 moa shift up and 8 moa left. It shot fine without it so we took it off and didn't look back. This was not a cheap brake and was mounted correctly so not sure what happened.

So if most newer Savages are coming with the forward bolt release... stock manufacturers will have to come out with updated stocks sooner or later. eh?

Did my reasearch, slept on it over night, bought one and was not disappointed. Was thinking of putting a Boydes stock on but that will add weight on my hunting rig!

I've not bought one yet but I'm about 90% sure I will eventually. I've always liked how the AICS looks but I also realize that it'll be about the same price as the entire rifle and glass, most likely. That's down the road a few years anyway.

How difficult is it to put a cheek riser on the standard 10 tr stock? Also, what's the price and where would you get it?

I just bought a 10fp le1 off the ee a couple weeks ago. Sweet friggin rifle. And, bonus, it was already in a boyds thumbhole stock. In my opinion you cant go wrong with a savage rifle.

I have the Savage 10 FCP HS Precision .308, love it. Shoots very accurate however its a heavy rig, probably not the best for a hunt.
