Hi all I'm looking for info and advice on upgrading my axis it's .223 I'm thinking of everything bolt, barrel, and trigger any and all advice or info welcome
Cheers all

I tend to agree with the above but if you are committed to the plan then why not talk to Jerry Tea ( Mystic player ) as he is pretty up to speed on all things Savage.

To put it a little less bluntly, the best advise would be to start over rather than spend money on that action. The Stevens 200 rifle is a good starter and can be seriously modified but the Axis is not. Since this is in the Precision Rifle forum, I will guess you want a rifle capable of repeatable precision. Although I do not know what you will use it for I will caution you on carrying a heavy rifle in the field, basically it is not a smart move. If you want an accurate hunting rifle it can be built using a custom lightweight barrel. If you want this rifle for range use only, a heavy barrel is the better choice.

In this Precision Rifle forum we can advise spending $6000 or $600 depending on what your goal is. The advise so far is to start over and build what you really want.

Timney has start producing a better trigger for this rifle but it will still be around 1.5/2lbs.

Many Savage parts interchange with the Axis - barrels, bolt heads, mags if you change the bottom plate.

Stocks are the weakest link right now as there isn't one offered besides factory.

The Axis is a great value as a hunting rig and with a bit of TLC, runs very very well. I can certainly help you tune it up.

BUT it is not the action you want to start with if you are planning on building a true precision rig.

You would be miles ahead with a Stevens or Savage.

My Edge started life as a 308, then spent time this summer as a 223, now a 7-08 for hunting season. Makes for a very accurate and light HUNTING rifle.

No more, no less...

Jerry

Upgrading an axis is like going to a ### pride paraide and bringing a banna for lunch. Sure it seamed like a good idea originally.... But in the end, your going to regreat it.

Oh buddy - you know a lot lot of us are upchuking over the screens right now eh. Eeeeowww.

....Or just take all that money and go buy a nice TC Icon P.H. in 223 they shoot incredible out of the box put a Sightron Big Sky on it and you are in real business... Cheers. JP.

Stick with the Savage, look at the model 12 VLP DBM in 223 1 in 7" barrel. It has a decent laminated stock that would make for a stable platform and easy to bed the action, has a proved track record and after market parts including barrels are easy to come by.

Sell it on the EE and buy a stevens 200 then build it , best bang for your buck imo.
Then you can get a good stock ,trigger , rail , whatever you need .

I just put together a f-class rig on a stevens 200 and it shoots great , just as good as my rem's .

I am guessing the money you get for your axis will buy another.

Having a Savage model 12 in 308 and a TC Icon P.H. in 308 all i can tell you, is the Icon as is shoot thighter group, those rifles are just awsome and unknown from the shooting crowd but they deserve to be discover... Cheers. JP.

Caramel

You seem to be determining that all TC Icons are better than all Savages from a statistically significant sample of one each.

The TC may be a great rifle. I don't know, I've heard basically nothing about them (no I have not looked). The Savage is pretty proven as an accurate factory rifle and there are more after market parts for them if the OP wants to make changes later.

Probably either is a good choice but the Savage will likely be more versatile right now (triggers, barrels, scope mount base rails, bolt handles).

That being said, if the TC is a good platform they will start to make news and develop a reputation......just like Savage did when they were digging up market share from Remington.

Without a single modification my TC Icon Warlord 308 shot on par with both my TRG-22 highly customized, i repeat my experience with those rifles being very enlightening and rewarding, just sharing a few thoughs with you gentlemans, far from me any idea of bashing any other brand, i love my Cooper, Savage, Remmy, Browning, Steyr, Ruger, Sako, Tikka to... JP.

Your TC Icon Warlord with an MSRP of $3,500 shot on par with a TRG-22?

Cripes, it better.

That is orders of magnitude more cost that a Savage Axis. No really comparing apples to apples there. I'm with Wheels on this one. Not to bash you Caramel but that is like comparing a Porsche to a Chevett. :D
