I recently aquired a m38 Turkish Mauser, all seems to be in good working order, except the safety. With the safety lever to the right, the the fireing pin is disengaged, but the bolt can be opened, I don't think it should be able to be opened. with the safety lever in the vertical position, the fireing pin is disengaged and the bolt can be opened, i think this is normal. Now when i flip the safety lever to the left, the gun will fire, but the safety lever will not go back to the right, unless i a) Open the bolt, then flip the lever to the right, but in doing this, the bolt sleve and the cocking sleve also rotate and the bolt can not be closed due to the lever on the cocking sleve is not lined up with its track. or B) Remove the bolt and use the edge of the work bench to depress the cocking sleeve until the safety lever can be fliped to the right, and the bolt re-installed. Any ideas for a Milsurp and a gunsmithing Newbie???

This should not happen!

This also should not happen! With the bolt removed hold the bolt in your left hand. You must "####" the cocking piece with the safety in the vertical or 12 o'clock position. The bolt shroud and cocking piece has to be screwed in to shoulder against the bolt handle. To do this, screw it clockwise until it resists slightly, you will see a spring loaded pin in the bolt shroud, push it in (fig 6and37 below) and continue turning the bolt shroud until it shoulders.

Follow this link on bolt assembly/disassembly, http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/mauserboltdisassembly/index.asp

If you have done it correctly let the cocking piece go into the firing notch in the bolt and the firing pin should protrude from the bolt face approx .055"

Thanks for the info ringo, I followed the assembly/disassembly instructions on the link you gave me, cleaned her up a bit , put her back together and she works, like a charm. I think since the bolt came taped to the stock, the bolt shroud got spun around, but thanks again for your help...
