Tula and Izhevsk Factory Mosin Nagant....Any differences?

I was wondering if anyone more knowledgeable than me know any of the history of each factory. And any differences between rifles and equipment made at these factories?

How old are these factories?

Are Tula Made Mosin Nagants better than Izhevsk? Or Vice~versa? Are they the same quality thought WW2 and there production years?

I don't know all of which you ask but the Tula factory was started by order of Peter the first of Russia in 1712.

There arms factories go back a long way, as previously mentioned. There is some very interesting reading on the internet concerning these armories. Some firearms were streamlined for production at certain factories but during wartime there was mass production of everything. Many collectors feel pre-wartime production firearms we of better quality.

I was just researching this same question on the net. Concensous was that there really was no difference in quality between the two. The quality was better for pre war guns overall. The main difference was that Tula was a much smaller factory and not as many were produced and thus are harder to find. The discussion I came across was in regard to the M38. Can't speak for all models produced by the two different arsenals.

Quality is pretty much equal...Tula made rifles are lower on the production end...Though I find that Tula mfg are cleaner overall, finish and markings are better...but that's my opinion. .

Although in 1941, the Tula plant was under siege by the Nazis for a while. In some of the 1941 made rifles you can pretty much see the desperation reflected in their finishes. They came out the door firing.

I am not sure if Tula was smaller or not, but they were also more responsible for manufacturing things like the SVT-40 than the Mosin Nagant. There are more Izhevsk Mosin Nagants out there just as there are more Tula SVT-40's and SKS'. Each factory was prioritized differently. Finish wise its more between year (pre-war, during-war, and after-war) that determine the quality.
