Tumbling - Alternative Media

Tell me the source/brand of your small size walnut media.

The brand I use is Kay-Tee I think ( I dump it into a 5 gal pail with a lid and throw the bag away). I believe the last bag cost $29.00ish for a 25lb bag at Pet Smart. 1 bag lasts a long time.

Oh, and its the exact same size as the RCBS stuff.

Is that the Kaytee Kay-Bob Bedding and Litter?
(which is corn cob)

I went to find a link for you, only to find they seem to have changed the packaging material and size:bird litter

The last bag I bought was paper similar to dog food and was 25lbs.

BTW I like to use a media that actually would go into a .17 neck, so media that is too coarse just doesn't cut it. (Jam up some media in a .17 neck and you will have a grand old time trying to get it out.)

The Frankford Arsenal media is the best I have found for that problem. Its nice and fine. A bonus is its also one of the cheapest but it doesnt contain polishing agents. Just add some rouge or NuFinish.

I've looked around locally and struck out on all fronts. It seems either no one around here (Lethbridge) carries the walnut litter, or I'm blind. I was thinking of getting a bag of walnut blasting media to use.
Has anyone here gone this route? Is there a specific size I should ask for?

I was looking for some today but I could not find a sample of the media for size comparison :( and it's a special order item from the building supply stor that carries it.

I was thinking of trying a couple of blasting places to see if they have any I could look at but have not gotten that far today.

Price here is around $25/80lbs but I don't want to order it if it's the wrong size, I don't need 80lbs of useless walnut material.

EDIT
I went to Petland today and bought a bag of Reptile Walnut Bedding/Litter. The walnut particles are a bit smaller than the RCBS walnut media ($18.99 + tax/5lbs) and was only $20 after tax for approx 15-20lbs, It is measured in Litres on the bag, 11 Litres. There was a bigger bag as well but I figure the bag I bought should last a good while anyway.

I was looking in the bedding section as I was looking for the Kay-Tee Bird Litter but one of the sales girls took me to another section that had the Reptile bedding material. So make sure you track down one of the sales people and ask for Walnut bedding.

How long should 5 lbs of Walnut last? I know it depends on how many cases you clean and how often but does anyone have a guesstimate on time frame to change it?

Well I picked up some a 7lb bag of the Kay Tee Crushed Walnet bedding suggested by joe-nwt. Looks great, nice small media yet seemingly large enough to wrok really well. 7lb was $12 (Still cheaper than brand tumbling media). 25lb bag (unavailable at the time) was only $25. I plan on trying it today. I'll let you know how it goes. (at $1 a lb for the big bags, I may have found a new favorite and not worried about reusing media over and over.)

When my 25lb bag runs out a bit later this year, I'm going to check out the blasting media as well. Supposed to be the same thing in a 50lb bag and cheaper still.

I've only ever seen sandblasting walnut come in one size, but I've only bought it twice (those 50lb bags last a long time.) All I asked for was "crushed walnut" and I got what I was looking for. The two places I went to both had samples to look at and the first (and only) sample I saw was the right stuff. I don't think there's a lot of variation in the size of walnut for sandblasting purposes.

I always tumble before I decap, and never have a problem with the flash holes.

Depending on the mood I'm in, I'll sometimes shoot a blast of air from a compressor with a blow gun in the primer pocket afterwards, to blow all the dust etc out of the case.
