I know that ground corn cob and walnut shell are commonly used as tumbler media. I've read in other threads that you can pick some up as pet bedding. So I went to my closest pet store - Petsetera; and they don't have, nor do they normally carry either. I asked what he could suggest for it and he suggested using ground corn kernals (looks like half rice size balls) or CAREFRESH pet bedding. I picked up the smallest carefresh as this is what he suggested would be the best thing he carried, but he also said that he didn't know how abrasive it would be. This is what it says:

CareFRESH is a patented pet bedding made from relaimed pulp. THis short-fiber pulp can't be made into paper; it's free of inks, dyes, clay and chemicals used in the paper making process. It is processed to remove potentially harmful aromatic hydrocarbons that exist in pine and cedar oils: it's tested for contaminants and sanitized to 380F to reduce bacteria, mold and fungus. ... Less Dust. CareFRESH is softer and less dusty than other forms of bedding. It's cleaner and healthier for you and your pet. Good for the environment. CareFRESHhas turned pulp andpaper industry waste into pet owners ....

This stuff feels like ground egg carton material. Feels exactly the same as egg cartons. Now for the questions. Has anybody used this before/Can I use this stuff for tumbler media? Those who do go to the pet store for their tumbler media-can you tell me the name(s) of the stuff your buying so I can look for it in the local pet shops?

Sounds like you bought paper litter.I do not know how well it will work as a tumbler media, as it is not likely to be abrasive enough to really clean your brass.
What I usually buy at the pet store is lizard litter, it is sometimes sold as bird litter, and is just ground walnut shell. The same thing you buy at the gun shop as tumbling media, except it has not had any chemicals added and is about 20 % of the price.

Since walnut is very cheap from sandblast or oil supply places, it is hardly worth looking for alternatives, unless you want different results.

Take it back and get Lizard Litter which is ground walnut. I got mine at PETLAND but I would think Petcetera should have the same stuff.

I have a bag of Sandblast media on order coming in soon which is the cheapest way to buy Walnut. $25/50lbs.

I just don't know where the hell I am going to store a 50lb bag of walnut...

What store did you go to to buy it as sandblast media? I haven't got a clue on that one. Sounds like a great plan to me.

I had the lady from the building supply store phone me the other day and ask what size I wanted, i just told her that I wanted the smallest as she was rattling off size numbers and told me that most people order the medium. I had to inform her that I wanted it for other purposes and to order me the smallest size.

I never thought of trying Lordco here

As was said above, go to a welding supply store and get some crushed walnut, here in Thunder Bay I get 50 lbs. for $15.00 bucks. It works great.

I have been told good old plain white rice sold in bulk works fine as a media but have not tried it as of yet...

I have found rice to be noisy in the bowl, which is a factor for me as I live in a small space.

Also, at current prices rice is $15-20 for a 10kg bag, which is almost double what I pay for walnut at Manus Industrial Abrasives in Edmonton.

Carefesh is made of the same stuff EESA's Berms are made out of!!!

LOL!!

We had 1000 Transport Dump trucks haul it is.

I use corn cob media that I pick up from a local factory that does work with copper fittings.

Mind you I get it for FREE!

Today I bought some finely ground English walnut shell (aka lizard bedding) from Petland. $15 for 11 Liters worth. I don't think that's much of a deal, but then again, I haven't priced out the brand name tumbling media for awhile. I suspect the best deals on walnut shell are to be had from sandblasting supply stores.

I tumbled some brass using the lizard bedding stuff as-is and it didn't do a great job of cleaning. It worked, but I was expecting more from fresh media. I'm going to mix in some polishing compound and give it another go. I only had four 1" square pieces of old dryer sheets in there for the first tumble and they came out completely caked.

You use complete dryer sheets not 1" squares.
