I see that there are a few companies out there now selling pure tungsten shot, albeit at a price that will curl your hair .
Their sales stuff is all about the wonder of it and having used Kent last season I am inclined to believe.
Does anyone have a tungsten recipe for 3" 20ga?
I suspect that because it is at least as hard as steel that one would want to use a very heavy walled wad
I note that the Tungsten Super Shot folks suggest loading load a 28ga wad with a spacer inside a 20ga wad...
Any thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated

I have been doing a lot of research on tungsten based shot .There is a few choices for the reloader super shot ,nice shot ,ITX shot, hevishot I belive you can load 3" shells for 2.50 a round wich is high but a lot cheaper than factory. some observations.
supershot pros-density 18g/cc, tight patterns
cons-2nd most exspensive,Too hard barrel damage, usa only

nice shot-pros-density 10.2g/cc(lead10.9/gcc),round uniform, soft good in old barrels
cons-most exspensive,light for tungsten,most exspensive

hevishot-pros-density 12g/cc tight patterns most load data, easy find
cons-not uniform odd shapes,not uniform density,price

itx shot - pros- least exspensive soft like lead more dense than steel, round uniform
cons- one supplier, least density of the three, avalibility

I personally will be looking to load hevishot/steel duplex load like hevi-metal to bring the cost down to affordable but im still looking for published data. If I could find Itx @ U.S. pricing I would load that as well.

I thought the hype about heavier than lead tungsten shot was a bit over done until last fall, when I fed my 16 ga. Citori some #6 tungsten for duck hunting. One ounce of #6 hevi-shot and Modified choke was very deadly combination! I even got a nice double on blue (snow) geese flying over at about 50-60 yds up. It is worth the price if you can hit 'em!
My handload recipies are from Ballistic products, and include a mylar wrap to ensure all the pellets stay inside the very thick walled wad.

I agree I use heavy shot on turkey and it kills , it hits harder than lead but I cant afford to shoot factory loads for ducks and geese, were did you buy the bp stuff? will?

I have been very fortunate in that I got into a great buy on some Kent TM a number of years ago. I shoot it in 20 gauge mostly but I have some for my 16gauge and 12 gauge guns. It does kill amazingly well at longer distances. If I was going to look at reloading it I would try and find the lightest charges possible, I wouldn't bother with a 3 inch load. These pellets do not need a 3 inch charge to kill cleanly at any range. FS

Has anyone tried product from tungsten-spheres. They are advertising it as about $31/lb which still works out to about $2.00 a shot. They offered to send me a sample which I have accepted - I want to find out how hard it is. At 15-16g/cc it should be pretty deadly stuff but I have yet to find a recipe for it

interesting I think it should fall between hevishot and supershot for hardness as density and hardness seem to go hand in hand with tungsten. will they not provide the rockwell scale info or any reloading data ? barrel damage is almost a given if you shoot a bunch of these high density loads.

I bought a bunch of old Remington Hevi-shot, I killed three early season Canadas with 1&1/8 loads of 7.5 shot. I also used the 1&3/8 load of 4's with a skeet choke in my opinion not better load exists anywhere for decoying Geese. The only problem with the super shots I have noticed is that it is very easy to use too much choke and get blown patterns ( I exclude TM). Realistically most people should only be shooting birds under 40 yards and at that distance modern steel will do it's job well, the only benefit of super shot is that you can increase pellet numbers and thus increase hit probability.

If you really NEED much heavier shot, I suppose you COULD use uranium.... but the Gummint has already crudded half the Middle East with it.

Then there's gold: not really a helluvvalotta price difference AND it's soft enough it wo't wear your choke!

Maybe it's about time that shooters and hunters challenged the Gummint's assertions regarding lead-shot poisoning in waterfowl. The entire US and subsequent Canadian lead-shot ban was based on exactly ONE flawed survey which raised "concerns' about what "could" happen. It's time that we demanded a proper scientific survey and legislation based on what really happens, not some eco-nut's carefully-crafted (and anti-gun) "fears".

One thing everybody forgets: WE are citizens, TOO.
Right now, it goes like this: 1 eco-nut "fears" something, 2,000,000 other CITIZENS lose out.

The whole thing is completely out of balance.
