BigRedd and others,

I read the link, interesting that you would require a special additional course to hunt turkey? I didn't know there was such a thing. What is the reasoning or justification for this requirment by the provincial government?

too many arsewipes trying to shoot hunters instead of turkeys.hence the reason for the course

I guess it surprises me as I assumed that all hunters in ontario had to pass a hunters education exam to gun hunt and get their card. What makes Turkeys so special? More education is always a good idea I am just surprised it is required.

With a relatively new season on a "new" species, they want to get the point across not to stalk turkeys, but to call them in instead. Unlike deer hunting, stalking them can lead to injury or fatalities. If the MNR had their way we'd be wearing blaze for turkey hunting too.:p

Well the short answer is that more people are killed in the US hunting Turkeys than by all other hunting accidents.
I agree that the course now is too long and top heavy with commercialism. I took the very first one offered in Ontario way back in 86. You could probaby shorten it up to an hour and make it addendum to the hunter safety course.
I have hunted Turkeys in both Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as all over Ontario. Believe me when I say there are lots of people who can benefit from a Turkey Course.;)

Adrian Hare is a member here and a professional Turkey Hunter, he has more Turkey hunting experience than anybody I know. I hope he chimes in here with his take on the Turkey Course offered in Ontario.

My understanding... that...
A. The Turkey course does benifit new hunters. Apparently in Maine, their very first season back in the early 80's produced a grand total of 3 birds, because they were hunting them like deer.
B. The Turkey Course is also a fund raiser for OFAH/NWTF to fund Turkey enhancement programs.

I may be wrong but that is what I understood. We are looking at doing something similar here, if we ever get birds on the ground in PEI.
