What is the difference between a shotgun that has a full choke and a "turkey gun"? Could you use steel shot in a turkey gun?
Thank you for your valuable time!

If the Turkey gun has interchangeable choke tubes (our 870's do) then you can use steel shot... steel is not recommended in full chokes due to performance issues... anything tighter is a safety issue as the shot can "stack-up" and bulge or blow barrels. Our 870 turkey guns have 23" barrels with 3 1/2" chambers and do double duty as back-up waterfowl guns also... for turkeys we use Kick's .665 chokes and for waterfowl we switch to Kick's modified chokes... we also shoot upland birds with these guns with improved or skeet rem tubes... see pics below;

hey

Thank you for your reply and great pics. Has the grins washed off yet? I am looking at a Moss 500 Turkey gun. Dunno if you can change chokes. So...if a shotgun barrel has a modified, you can shoot steel?

Can't you use lead? I thought turkey guns usually have a forest camo, a pistol grip of some sort, fiber optic sights, an X-full choke, and you buy turkey loads. You want to get a clean headshot that blows it right off sparing all the meat.

Turkey can be shot with any scattergun. Full or tighter chokes are used to increase range. Most the guns I hunt with are sxs full/mod fixed chokes. I've also taking turkeys with my trap guns

For late season turkeys I use a mossberg 535ats with a custom made .650 choke to really increase my yardage for shy birds. I know a guy that gets his turkey every year with a cooey single shot 20ga with a fixed mod choke. Turkey hunting is mainly marketing in my opinion

Very true brybenn...use whatever you have, it'll get the job done. My Nova 12 guage is my one gun for everything. It's killed rabbits, ducks, shoots clays. No turkey with it yet but it's my turkey gun too. :)

Howdy...I am not looking to use it for turkey. I won't live long enough to get a draw license in Alberta. I would use it for ducks, geese. Can't use lead.

We have some Ithaca Turkeyslayers, Deerslayers and Waterfowl shotgun arriving next week.

:D

I use a Beretta Xtrema for all my hunting but there is something about the Ithacas that are just outstanding.

+1 on the Ithaca 37. JMB genius design in motion. You can also use it in the duck blind and on the pheasant and grouse hunts. Deerslayer will shoot tight groups with foster slugs.
