Gents,

Have you ever seen a turkey there? I went there hunting this morning but no luck. I don't know if there are turkeys at all.

Thanks,
Rudi

Rudi.....I was duck hunting there a couple of years ago and scared up a hen Turkey in the swamp, in a spot that i would have never guessed would hold turkeys...good luck...hunting in there may be tough.

Are you talking about the lands at the north end of Old Simcoe Street? If so, last time I scouted the area I saw signs posted stating that hunting wasn't allowed there anymore as it's now an "educational" environmental project. You may not be able to get Turkey there anymore.

csmith99,

There is a small part inside the wildlife area which became an education center. There is where you saw the "no hunting" signs.

There are turkeys there, but I would think they are pretty pressured. Best tactic is to go early morning and see if you can here one gobbling on the roost and then try and set up on him.

Otherwise, pick a nice clearing or field, where they may come to strut and set up.

Call softly and sparingly for pressured birds. Patience is a must!!!!

What does "early morning" mean in regards to turkey hunting? What time do they start gobbling? Even earlier than sunrise? (I'm a newbie)

Early means real early! Before the eastern sky even starts to get light. Toms will start to gobble as early as 4:30am in my neck of the woods. They seem to have some sort of internal clock that lets them know when daylight is coming. They usually won't flydown until there is enough light for them to see if it is safe to fly down. This may vary by bird or area. The birds that I have setup on started to flydown at around 5:30am. If you are trying to hunt roosted birds, don't try to get too close to them. 100m is as close as I will get. Try to figure out which direction the birds will go after flydown, & setup there. If you are within 100m or so you DON'T have to call loudly. I just give a few soft tree yelps while the birds are still on the roost. The Tom will hear you & know where you are. Be patient & don't call too much or too loudly. Good luck.

Would you suggest a Crow call or something to bring them down then a box call to lead them in?

I went up Old Simcoe and say the orange signs. That led me to believe the whole area was off limits. Now that I know there's still an area that I can hunt in, I'd be thinking I'd head back up there and see what I can get.

Hunting from Toronto really PITA. Wake up at 3AM to get to the hunting area by 5 and got back to work by 9AM makes hunting a misery. :(

They will only come down when they are ready. The normall roost gobble on their own, so there is no sense in possibly giving your location away.

Use whatever call works best for you, but normally in turkey hunting, less calling is best. A lot of guys call way too much and way to loud.

Waterfowler,
It seems you are a seasoned turkey hunter. So here is my plan:
I will try again the turkey hunting on Saturday in the Ganaraska forest. I will go there at 4am.
Then what?? If I hear something then I will try to go in that general direction. (do I need a flashlight??)
If there is no sound, then what? Just wait and try calling here or there randomly for an hour or so?
