Hey all,

Silly question, just got curious and bored,

Are there any rules on how many shells you can carry/load when hunting turkey, I didn't see any in the regs. Just playing devils advocate here, lets say you get checked and you have 3 shells chambered and 10 in your pocket, could the officer say that "you have the ability to and may have shoot more than one turkey" or is this just stupid?

I dont see a problem with this, I may just be a bad shot and need a few extra shells lol

I dont want to be insulting, but have you done the turkey education course. The amount of ammo you can carry out side of the gun is not restricted in any hunting i know of

Yes I have, and I know, I couldnt find this rule anywhere and never heard of it, I was jsut curious and bored and thinking of random possible rules as I was packing some shells in my turkey vest. I said its stupid, but thought Id check anyhow.

You should need only one, if you ear 2 or 3 fast shots, look like maybe there is still a gobbler for the taking, myself 3 in the 11-87 and 2 in my pocket, the only time i shot 2 times is when me and my buddy were back to back and i took the 2 gobblers... JP.

Yeah very true, I was more worried if I unfortunately didnt completely get it the first time. But I have never had that issue, always only one.

Or I somehow miss and have to wait another 5 hours for another turkey haha

the answer is right on the Ontario Hunter Education Program website..

You must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the chamber and magazine combined. Under the Criminal Code of Canada you cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semi-automatic centre fire rifle unless that clip/magazine has been specifically exempted pursuant to the Firearms Regulations.

BTW: a shotgun sidesaddle is not a "magazine" so you have have an additional 5 right on the side of the shotgun (but why you would need more then a single 1.. hmmmm)

I have seen a gobbler taken on the third shot.

And Caramel... you should modify your post... you CANNOT party hunt for turkeys... and you are allowed ONE per day... probably not a good idea to post that story.

He hunts in New york as well, so may be legal there.

Also prove he is telling the truth. Maybe he winged the bird and his partner wrang it's neck, his partner killed it not him.

Yup, makes sense! Anyone got some patterning tips or a website about it? Im sure there is a forum around here somewhere I can just search for..

There is a thread in this forum somewhere... either here in huntong o rin the shotgun section.....

I have never needed more than 1 shot.... That being said, I have never had to shoot one that was farther than maybe 10-15 yards away.....lol

This was in New York state and we had each a tag, did talk to the ranger about that and there was no fault as both gobbler were tag proprely with 2 differents names, Ontario is different... JP.

Fair enough... Was just getting your back on that one... You never know... My son and I have taken both our birds a split second apart on more than one occasion... We once called in eight mature gobblers together (weird)... The hardest part was waiting for them to seperate enough for us to both shoot... Fun stuff!

That sir is awesome.... I have never had more than two in front of me before.... that must have been a HUGE rush
