i don't get to turkey hunt too much, have a kid, priorities.
today was great. i *thought* 5:50 am was a good start, but low and behold, Mr. Tom was gobbling his head off on the other side of the bush. I wanted to cross the field to make it to the blind but Tom would surely spot me. I hold back, out of sight.
I set up just out of his visual with a hen and jake decoy.
Make a call, wait.... call, wait and Tom sees them and is coming over. 80 yards, at my 3 o'clock. sure bet. i don't flinch. He makes a display with his tail fan, what a beautiful sight! he then makes an abrupt turn! then out of sight. get out my call. as i am making the call, i look at my 10 o'clock. Theres a coyote! He is about 100-150 yds now and ready to go into the bush. Turkey Tom musta got an eyeball on the coyote. Make another call, mangy ol`coyote stops ,looks at me then goes into the bush.
I had a feeling i would see a coyote. I even brought a shell of N0.4 BUCK just for Wile E Coyote. A wee bit closer and he would have lead poisoning.
Next, I cross the field and I go to a pre set blind. Called, Lots of gobbling, but won't come.
Back home now. Coffee is brewing. Oh well, got a 15 lb Jake first day, so i am not complaining. Any day hunting, is better than a day at work, and the day is not over.
