I got a Turkish Mauser and was wondering, if it was a large ring or small ring. How do you tell the diffrence between the two? It is in 8mm Mauser right now, can I get the chamber reamed to 8mm-06? Thanks for helping out a dumby....:D

there are numerous "Turk Mausers"....

There are 7 listed in 'mauser military rifles of the world' and thats doesnt include all the variations that other countries supplied them with

If it is in original military configuration, it is best to leave it that way. Once you have made all of the "sporterizing" mods to make it a decent hunting or target rifle, you will find that you could have bought a new, better gun for about the same amount. If you want to sporterize, there are already modified barrelled actions out there. Here's a great Turk Mauser sporterizing site: http://www272.pair.com/stevewag/turk/turkmain.html

Once you have determined what you have (using the links provided by Steppenwolf), a rule of thumb is that you will only want to rechamber to step it up if it is a M98 (three locking lugs), large ring action. Many are large ring, small barrel shank (a Turkish oddity) - that is ok. Of course it's only worth your while to rechamber an excellent barrel. 8mm/06 can be accomodated with no, or nearly no mag, ramp and rail mods. A great round that outperforms the 30/06. BTW, there's nothing wrong with the 8x57 - it's essentially the equal of the 30/06 (from the deer's perspective anyway).

Been there.

Thanks Andy, bubba has already been at my turk, its already drilled and tapped for bases, bolt is bent, has a clip, and the sights are taken off, so most of the work is done, I would only need to get 'er reamed to 8mm-06 if the action will take it. Thanks for the great site too.
