Twist rates vs bullet weight.

I am reading .223 for a weatherby sub-MOAN with a 1:12 rate of twist. My question is, can i how low a weight bullet can i use with my rate of twist? I would like to use something like varmint grenades but on the box it says to use 1:9 rate barrels only. Can i use something similar? What is everyone else using for groundhogs ?

Your 1-12" twist will handle most .224 bullets from 35 grains up to 60 grains.
The twist formula is related to bullet length. i.e. longer bullets require quicker [lower number] twists, shorter bullets are stabilized in slower twists.
The varmint grenade is long for it's weight, due to not having a lead core.
Therefore the recommendation for the 1-9" twist.
For groundhogs, I would try the 50 or 55 grain Ballistic Tips or Hornady V-maxes.

its not bullet weight but bullet length that comes into play for twist rates

i can have a lead core bullet work well in say a 1 in 12 but through a tin core bullet of the same weight and it will not work well because it needs to be longer to get the same weight
 
antiqueguy is right. it is the length of the bullet and its ultimate velocity that determine requirements for twist.

you have a varmint barrel. stick with bullets that fall somewhere between 40 and 60 grains.
