Hey everyone!

So, it will be a while before I am able to purchase the .204 I would like (think 3-5 years) but, I do currently have a .270, and a .22 mag, and I also have land that I can hunt on, so I would like to try some coyote hunting a few times in January-March.

I am interested in buying a Quiver Critter Decoy, as well as some Cabelas snow camo, (Canadian Cover Up Parka) which cost about $100.

The one thing I am undecided on is a digital game call.

Now, I am not really interested in spending $200 on a call, but I also don't want to get something that will be useless to me.

I've narrowed down my choices to the

Johnny Stewart Wildlife Calls™ Attractor Compact Digital Game Callers

and the Extreme Dimension Mini Phantom Digital Call.

These are both compact calls within the $30-$45 range.

They both have gotten great reviews, with the Johnny Stewart perhaps receiving a few better ones.

The one advantage that the Mini Phantom has is that you can buy an external speaker for it, as well as additional sticks, which come in at $10-15. This means that I could buy a predator call and have a crow sound stick, a deer sound stick, and a turkey sound stick with me at the same time. I kind of like this idea. The downside with the Johnny Stewart is that although you can buy different calls, you have to buy separate units.

Anyone have any experience with these calls? Anyone have any advice?

Thanks

both calls are useless crap. spend more money or you will never be happy;)

my dad just bought a phantom pro series and we had it out 2 days ago calling coyotes. that thing sounds so pathetic that it took all i had not to bust out laughing. he tried crow, jackrabbit, cottontail, and coyote howls and the sounds were just pathetic.

i have a johnny stewart preymaster and it sounds awesome, its small, new ones are wireless, and the memory cards are less than 2" long. ive called in many coyotes and crows plus a few hawks, owls, and fox with it so it must sound good. crows just circle trying to figure out why that round green thing sounds like a dying rabbit:D

the cheaper electronic calls are just that...CHEAP. you will just be disapointed on your hunts because not many critters will fall for cheesy calls.

save up some money and buy a decent one (preymaster is $125 new) or make your own for less than $60

and i second the hand call. for $40 you can buy a pretty good one. i had a custom made wood laminate call from the states (won it over on predatormasters.com) that was awesome...its in the bush somewhere:mad:

Go to army surplus and by a white nylon cover up jacket and pants. Mine were 30 for the set I think. Wear them over your regular hunting clothes. Save your money on snow camo.

I agree, inexpensive is usually cheap when it comes to e calls.

Make your own we made 2 callers for about 100.00 each.Look on web site for instructions they work as good as the store bought,my 2 cents

X2 Good point Waterfowler

I just purchased a new set of cover over pants, jacket and white wool face mask from Army Surplus for $35. All that expensive snow camo is a gimmick that costs you big $$
If you want an e-caller I would only look at Foxpro, or Minaska but they're gonna cost around $400-500. Buying a cheap call is only going to get you frustrated and loose interest quickly.

the cheapest caller Id buy is a Johnny Stewart PM-4. Its a wireless caller that takes the same sounds cards as the PM-3. The PM-3 is NOT wireless and has like 50 feet of cord. I have the PM-3 and got soo sick of winding up the cord so I dont use it anymore. The Pm-3 isnt really loud enough I think and I heard the PM-4 is louder. Johnny stewart sounds are probably one of the best out there.

Pm-4 goes for about $200.
Pm-3 about $100
go to the foxpro site, they have refurbished callers (some older models that would work fine and wouldnt hurt the wallet)

ahhh hell just go buy the new Foxpro Fury....retails for about $599.99 american LOL

I got a foxpro fx3...I paid $450 awhile ago. No regreats, awesome sound and volume. Batteries last all day. Does everything I ask out of it.

Hmmm, a much different response then I expected... Are you really sure guys? These calls have gotten 4.6 and 4.9 out 5, on both cabelas and basspro websites.. I wouldn't be asking you if it was something that got 3 or 3.5.

I am a horrible hand caller, I suppose I could just work at getting better at that.. I wanted something versatile though, that I could use with all kind of calls..

"Are you really sure guys?" ..................NO, we are all lying to you, so you won't shoot any yotes.

an MP3 player and an external 6" horn speaker, a few components and a soldering iron. lots of plans on the net and you can download copy from a DVD of any call you want. and do it for well under $100

am i sure?

if i were your hunting buddy and you brought one of those cheap pieces of crap on a hunt, id shoot it;)

you will have better chance calling coyotes with a duck call than a welfare electronic call. my dads phantom couldnt even get crows to come over to us yet when i use the preymaster, crows always swarm the area looking for dinner. actually gets annoying so sometimes i let them have it.

i lost the handheld part of my wired preymaster so ill likely buy a wireless and sell my 50ft wire and speaker. ill post it in the EE section for anyone interested in making their own or you can order a replacement hand held for $45 from the company.

btw...we are all crappy callers at first. practice a bit and you will be surprised how easy it is. more satisfaction out of shooting a coyote when YOU made the sounds instead of a machine. try using an open reed call...now that will keep u busy for a while and the wife very annoyed ;)

An open reed caller will give you more versabilty then any e-caller will and more volume in most cases. All...or most of the sounds on an e-caller are done with an open reed call. There is no better feeling then taking a coyote with a hand call, having a predator come running in on you using nothing but your own air...its always a rush :D
If I can use an open reed call, anybody can ;)

check out the new primos power dogg elec call. it has remot with 100 to 200 yard capability in open fields. adjustable volume with remote, when volume is @ max it's pretty loud. cheaper then foxpro, the power dogg is @ most places in the states 150$ and you can find them on sale for 100$ if you watch for them. or as stated before you can always make your own. chack out varmint al's website for destructions.:D

you have to remember that the reviews on the Cabelas website is from Americans from like Wyoming and North/South Dakota that are crawling with coyotes. A lot easier to call and sound travels farther since its such open landscape.

I swear people from Wyoming could place a fake tree out in a field and shoot a truck load of coyotes that come to mark their territory on it.
