Buddy brought over his FIL's bubba'd 03 yesterday to line it up for his hunting rifle this year.
First question is "how to adjust rear sight for elevation". I have had millsurps before that the rear sight was simply moved up & down the "distance" ladder by pushing a button on the side & it slid freely along the staff. This particular rifle has the similar ladder but the "slide" has a flat side piece with two holes drilled into it similar to the cheap trigger locks available and on the other side is a sort of worm geared affair. It apears to me that the flat piece on the left side should loosen off to allow turning the worm but i tried and cant get it to budge.

second question came from him, there is a small loop right in front of the magazine well and he wondered what it was for...only thing I could come up with was it might be a lanyard eye for attaching mags to the rifle ???

On a '42 No. 4, the loop is for attaching a canvas action cover. On the old MLE, it was for a link attached to the magazine.
Your description of the sight doesn't ring any bells. Who knows what got installed or when?

Lithgow No.1 Mk 111 perhaps? Is the rear sight on the barrel ahead of the receiver? Push in on the " flat piece with two holes" and then slide to the desired range mark. The sight is calibrated for 174 grain Mk VII ammunition so depending on what ammunition he is using further testing and adjustment with the " worm gear" may be required.

You have a No1 MkIII*

Soak the rear sight mechanisms with some sort of penetrating oil and brush it often.

Take it out of the stock and pour boiling water over the rear sight, before applying the penetrant.

The boiling water will soften the crud and open the seams.

The rear sight on that rifle IS NOT ADJUSTABLE FOR WINDAGE. WINDAGE MUST BE ADJUSTED BY DRIFTING THE FRONT SIGHT.

Be careful to pull that forestock STRAIGHT DOWN when taking it off, or you will bugger the ways/bedding.
