i mentioned in another thread how I was able to turn a few up yesterday arvo and had camped there to get onto them this morning.
basic campfire stretcher swag setup on some flat elevated ground, was a bit cool early on but got a bit warmer later in the night, during the night I txt a mate and just kept it simple, " not wrong ,bloody everywhere" and then a few minutes later, "drop in X by morning to kill one" ....
a while later I got a txt back, time was sorted and if he wasn't there by 6:30 to go without.
No dramas, alarm set, fire stoked and out to it.
This morning I didn't even hear old mate drive up just 100m away from my location, the alarm sounded and I rounded up some camo pants and hiking boots, took the big pack out of the back and heard a vehicle start up?? Old maate! hes keen.
put the stuff into my Rig and rolled through the gate, I had to wait for enough light anyway so we didn't spook any deer out in the paddock early on, as it had it we rounded the back corner and I picked one up way down in the paddocks making hes way back to the bush, I drove up to parkin spot and told ol mate to cut it off.
by the time we got there an scared 100 roos and 3 cattle off the spiker was pretty onto it and stood broadside at 350 odd, I said to hold a foot above and send it, but we laughed and made it back to the ute to load up the backpacks/ day packs and get amongst the gums.
pretty shortly I got a view of a hind id seen yesterday, an not much else moving so old mate lined her up and I ranged 249m , gave him some encouragement as he is a powerful .270 Winchester user and he sent one.
WACK
and she dropped and rolled into some Blackberry..
I told him to load up incase a stag burst out, although none did for the 10 minutes we waited, but we could hear noise and thought was the hind thrashing a bit..
Next old mate points out 2 deer 500m away higher on the face, so a plan was hatched after we watched them for 5 minutes sneak around blackberry unsure of what happened.
we were to cut her and calf off and try shoot them both... that's what I wanted to do anyway!
as we climbed a further 200m elevation as fast as our 'young' lungs could, we snuck in for ambush
weren't able to see her straight away so snuck into a tight choked blackberry gulley, treeless apart from the odd one here and there, so picked out Brown deer in Grey blackberry is ok unless they are under the tunnels.
I get down close an glass the gulley, BOOM- I pick up a white topped set of Antlers looking at me!
I back down and signal to old mate, stag, shooter.
at first I had planned for him to shoot off my shoulder as I was crouched, but instead told him to sneak down infront and be ready and to shoot it.
approx. 100m across into the gulley, looking up at us and Bang- the T3 .270 barked again, then I yelled out to hit him again and as he ran off, Barked again and the stag contoured off.
twenty minutes later I rounded a blackberry and Whistled....
one of my old childhood mates, bloody stoked to have guided him onto hes first stag- after hes been into them and passing up many hinds this winter.
Tikka T3 .270 Winchester 3-9x50 vx2 shooting 150gr Corelokt factorys
he was stoked, lifted the antlers onto the shoulders and just said "#### ohfff, this is what its all about, been dreaming of doing this "
That's Hunting!!!!!
