Shot a Norinco Type 54 yesterday and I must say I was impressed. Now I want one for my collection. Any advice on what spare parts I should order with my purchase?

I love my Norkarev. It's pretty plain, the machining is fugly, but it's tough and shooting it is a blast! Heck, for the money I paid I didn't expect anything different. It's a very cool pistol.

Mine had a crappy magazine catch though. It was too short to engage the slot in the mags properly. I talked to Marstar and they promised to promplty send a new one out, but since I had to order some 20(5) round M14 mags anyway, I decided to spend $8 on a Soviet mag catch.

You'll want to get a replacement set of grips. Get something after market. Don't get the same crappy nork grips. That's it. Everything else should outlast you if you clean her right.

Where can I get grips? I ordered the Type 54 from Marstar yesterday and would like to get the Tokagypt 58 grips.

Is this true, the 54-1 has a safety and the 54 (from Marstar) does not have a safety?

Thanks!

FYI, the safety thing doesn't bother me at all. Some people do make a fuzz out of that, but I paid $150 for my second T54-1 with TWO mags to Lever Arms instead of $180 dollars to Marstar with only ONE mag + shipping. When I shoot T54-1, that safety doesn't bug me at all. Do your math.

Consider a 9mm barrel, and 9mm mags.

:)

You do need a 9mm barrel, but you don't need to buy 9mm mags to shoot 9mm in a T54-1.

No really. The 7.62x25 mags work just fine. This is because the so called "feed lips" aren't part of the mag, they are really part of the hammer group. The Rusky's designed it this way, so the feed lips are part of the gun and can't get damaged by dropping in the muck like a traditional mag.

Is it illegal to remove the safety on the 54-1 and replace it with a thin aluminum piece or some old chewed up bubble gum?

Not at all. I toyed with this, and then traded it.

For about $50 more, you could get a real TT33 surplus from several of our supporting board members. No ugly holes and a neat piece of history too.
