just a hypothetical question how hard would it be (if possible) to have a type 81 reworked to .223 and are there places in canada that could do it?

^ OP stated it was a hypothetical.. so cost isnt an issue in hypo situations.

Anything's possible with enough time and $. If no one has done it yet, my best bet would be to compare AK47 conversions to 556, then compare original parts from an AK and Type 81, then see if any converted parts are interchangeable, then all remaining parts have to be machined since nobody (as I know) has done this yet. Or have a look at a 5.56mm valmet rifle for parts that could fit.

That first shot out of you T81/556 rifle I'd take with a string attached to the trigger though...

I'd name it a "Type M85.5" :)

Nothing from the valmet will fit.

Converting a type 81 to 223 would present the following problems:

barrel - easy - replace, put original hardware on the barrel.
bolt - hard - bolt face will need to have a ring welded on, new extractor made
magazines - this is the most complicated part - 223 ak pattern mags are harder to get than 7.62x39. If you were hoping to use stanag mags, you'll need to design and manufacture an adapter, because there isn't one available (maybe yet).

If you really want to get into it - try Heron Arms, but he'll be asking you the same questions above. Probably easiest to wait for Norinco to come out with a 223 version.

Of course cost is an issue. He's asking a hypothetical to gauge wether or not he'd be able to get it done, which is also why he asks about a place that could do it.
Cost is a factor like any other. Not sure why you think the definition of "hypothetical" wouldn't take it into account.

Youza.

Ak74 mags can fit in the type 81 and feed good thing about that is a 5 round 5.45 mag Will fit 7 .223 that would be one bonus at least

I know there is a few in the US in 556. I think TFBTV on youtube has a video on them. They did mention having a hard time getting mags to feed properly.

They already make one, export version of the QBZ03/Type03.
You just need to beg somebody willing to make a big enough order to be exported. Like North Sylva.
