What's the trick to getting the pins out? A brass punch with a hammer from either side didn't seem to move them at all and just mushroomed the punch.

I just used a steel punch and had both pins out in a minute or so.
I also put a small block of wood under the receiver.
Pins were on the tight side but came out pretty easy.

Did it matter which side to hit from?

I went from left to right but really I don’t think it matters.
Pins aren’t tapered . Looked the same on both ends.

You have to use a small enough punch, people who removed the front hand guard on a SKS have an advantage, lol.

Try the biggest most stubbiest steel punch u can find that will still fit in the hole. Mine were very tight as well. I found that the buttstock was slightly swelled in the receiver from all the chemicals it has sucked up. I let it dry for weeks and it came out easily after that.

Gumout Freeze Out at Home Depot may help, as long as the sudden cold doesn't crack the wood. Good luck!

It's cool, my work is super chill.

We just hit it with a bigger hammer. Shoulda tried hitting it with my purse instead last night.

Now that I finished that I'm trying to get the lower handguard off my folder. I got the screw out but it feels like I'm gonna break the front nose of the handguard if I bend it far enough to get it out. Do you have you to drive the pin out of the forward retainer/sling point to get the handguard out?

did you remove the cleaning rod, I know it seems to simple, but it wont come with it in there

yep, cleaning rod has to come out first. I did the same at first. Not a shame unless you break your handguard or the cleaning rod or both.
