I know they are 2 totally different rifles and calibers im just wondering if someone has experience with both and they do how would you compare reliability? I know manual of arms is different but reliability is my main concern. Thanks

They are both 100 % reliable. Ammo for type 81 is cheaper since you can run surplus ammo. You can easily mounts optics on a type 97 which you cannot on a type 81. The type 97 is more accurate and can feed from 10 round pistol magazines. I think the type 97 is one of the most underrated firearms on the market.

Own both, very reliable, never had a issue with either. I have thousands of rounds down the 81 lmg as i had a good stock of surplus ammo and the gun always fires. Not as many down the 97, but again it has never disappointed.

For later T97s I would agree with all of this. The early ones with the carry handles suuuucked in my experience.

My older (2014) Type 97 needed the magwell opened slightly but after 10 minutes with a file and another 5 minutes with a chain saw file to give it M4 style feed ramps it fires pmags, LARs, everything. I’ve got well over a thousand rounds through it, half of them on adverse after a friend borrowed it for a couple dayslol. Not one issue or gun-related stoppage to date and its the one rifle that comes out of the safe anytime I do some shooting.

I got my T97 in 2013 (with the FTU mod), and have run thousands and thousands of rounds through it, including steel core, and it's been solid. Only recently did it slam fire on me, which kind of scared me, but I took it apart again and did a complete cleaning of it, and it hasn't happened since. It's also more accurate than my Tavor.

Now, a slamfire doesn't necessarily mean bad quality. Even the SKS slamfires for some people. But the T97 has been a rock so far. When I pull the trigger, it always goes bang.

I ended up selling my Type81 (I already had an SKS firing the same caliber, with nearly the same accuracy, which I just enjoyed shooting more). The Type81 was also a solid rifle. IMHO, it's personal preference. Do you want a bullpup, or do you want a traditional mag fed sporting rifle? Both are solid, even though they're Norinco..

i can shoot left handed a t81 tried a t97 and seems my famas days were better but i did try lol ... nothing beat a lefthand tavor in those days for a leftie.

The Type 97 has been solid and accurate in my experience. It's an amazing value for what you pay, and it can be field stripped without tools.

Type 97 doesn't jam after 1000 rounds, vs Colt M4 or AR15 starts hiccup after only two or three hundred rounds. And yes, Type 97 is surprisingly accurate.

Certainly hasn't been my experience with quality (Colt Canada) AR-pattern rifles. Don't know what kind of crappy ARs, ammo, or magazines you've been using...

ARs are their own world , I have friends who have expensive ones and say they are crap and lots of friends who love and swear by the cheap ones they have . I think its a thing of ,seems weird saying , too much aftermarket parts availability

Lol what battles?

French Indo China War 1945-1954, Korean War, Vietnam War 1954-1975, Sino-Vietnam War 1979, Sino-Vietnam Border Skirmishes 1979-1989, Soviet-Afghan War 1980-1988, numerous wars in Africa, Latin America, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The SKS has been used extensively in dozens of conflicts throughout history where it fought in many battles. Check out the SKS wikipedia page.
