Anyone have any first hand info on this Norinco made Assault rifle. Can it be pimped out? Is it worth pimping out at $1450 Canadian? Thanks in advance
for replies.:)

try the search....there are 2 or 3 big threads on the type 97 already. Most people seem to be waiting for another importer to bring them in at a better price. 1450$ seems a bit high for a norc in my opinion.

There's nothing about modifying them on those other threads.

The problem is you won't be able to do much with the base Type 97. It's good only for an Assault rifle and a plinker (plus it's restricted).

As previously stated it's the "sniper" version that holds the most promise. But... no one has one. Also if the price is too high why bother? You can find other rifles at prices not too far off. Even the HKSL8-4 goes for around 2200. 1450.00 is a pretty big chunk of that. It's very easy to justify spending the extra and getting something with a picany rail that's modifiable etc. With the Sniper version it may only come with the Chinese rail which will need to be modified. If the rifle shows up and it's around the $1000 mark then I'll get one. Right now I can't justify the cost.

Compare the current regular Type 97 VS the DPMS LR-308 (AR10). Both are restricted. I bought my DPMS LR-308 (AR-10) with flat top, picanny rail, 24" stainless bull barrel for $1500. They want $1450 for the Type 97. Right now it's poor value for the money. If you just want one for the novelty then ok. But there are a lot better purchases out there.

Bottom line: Good Price and availability for the Sniper model is required for this rifle to make any type of impact. If this happens. I'll be jumping on board.

That being said.... If The above does happen.

I would love to pimp the Sniper model with a .204 caliber fluted bull barrel (probably 24 inches) and a scope. I believe this would be one fun rifle and a serious varmint killer. The .204 has less recoil than the .223, much higher fps and is known for having very good accuracy from off the shelf ammo.
I would love to try this out.

The .204 round should still work in a .223 magazine right? They are close in size I believe. Anyone know about this?

Yes but that's what it's been marketed at.
Ok the Type 97 "Designated Marksman" model ;)
(Which I believe is the Type 88?)

I've read that it'll be non restricted. They might also just import some regular Type 97 rifles with longer barrels. I'd expect that to be most likely. I have a bad feeling the rail version (so called sniper) won't show up or will be a year or so away.

If you want a short hands on review go to Youtube and look up TooTallDean. There are two videos with impressions of the weapon.

Oh yeah I like that vid. Something about this rifle I really like. I usually only favor euro stuff- Hk and Swiss arms but something about this mmmmmm. Maybe like a sweet smelling chinese h**ker:D. No offense meant. I will definitely want a non- restricted version. Thanks for the replies.

Bullseye67 I hear you.
Normally I have zero interest in Norinco products. However if the price is right and the non restricted version with the rail comes in, then I believe this would be one fun rifle. Plus I'd really like to have one in .204 :D
But.... Cost and availability are the issues.

I'd much rather own a Type 56...... but noooo. Instead I'm allowed to own the more modern more accurate more *scary* looking rifle instead.

Such simplicity and logic in our firearm regs. :runaway:

Smoothbore. The answer is both. The regular Type97 has a carry handle and the scope would have to be mounted on top.

However the Type88 has an export version designated the KBU-97a which is also in 5.6mm and accepts AR mags. It's the predessesor and the first of these newer style weapons. It was the first bullpup 5.8mm rifle. The Type97 we're seeing came afterwards. The type 88 also isn't on the Canadian prohib list. Here's a picture.
