Hello Everyone,

The other day I took my newly acquired Type 97 to the range and shot about 50rnds. Out of that I had 2 FTF and about 5 more Failure to chamber properly.

Below are pictures of the 2 FTF's. I have no idea what could have caused this and want to reach out to the community for your expertise. The ammo was Norinco .223 from 93. Never had an issue with this ammo in any other gun so I dont think it's the ammo.... but what do I know...

The 1 FTF was from an LAR15 magazine and the other was from an XCR pistol mag. The other 5 rounds that would not chamber properly are from a Gen 2 PMAG.

As you can also see... the primer has not been struck. That also happened with the failure to chamber properly.

Thank you for your help.

Some people have reported issues with the norc ammo. Also reports with the grey LAR mags doing this. My rifle has been fine with all mags I've tried. You might wanna try some different ammo if it still persists with all mags you might need to file feed ramp. Just try this insert an empty mag and pull bolt back so you can see in chamber. Now pull down and back on mag and see if the top front of the mag comes down a lot. Mine does some but still feeds properly. You should be able to see where bullets have been rubbing. That's where you MIGHT need to file a tiny bit.

Have you not used the mag that came with the T97?
If you do without any problems, that would certainly point to the mags you are using.

The picture would indicate that the round impacted the feed ramp & got nowhere near the chamber.

I've run the stock mag, a couple of D&H and an LAR15 (gray) with a few hundred rounds without a hiccup in mine.
If you are nearby, we could run out to the range with my mags for a test.

Gen 2 p mags give some people problems Same with gray lar mags. Mine feeds will with gen 3 pmags and gray lar mags what gas setting were you on?

Do some reading about 3rd party mags ... people have been making minor adjustments to the mag well, or mag, lots of info but will take your eyes and your skill to figure out what us best for your unit ..

If the info you find is confusing .. start by comparing where the rounds sit when in the third party mags, compared to the OEM mag and the adjustments that people have used should be easier to understand. Some folks have used tape to prevent forward rock of the complete mag, others have resorted to file and sand paper .. lots of reports some pmag versions just do not work. Your pics are reflective of bad mag allignment.

I get my T97 in the AM , but I tinker , ( just love to tinker ) have done all the reading and as I want to use 10 round mags I am just chomping at the bit . My FTU should be in tomorrows mail also. That creates a delima, do I chop it up for the FTU before I ever get it to the range in April or wait.

I made a bunch of dummy rounds today ... looks like the odds are leaning toward dremel time well before April ... I will be manualy checking feeding right after it's first cleaning ... three mags types to check ..

ive never used the p.o.s. mag that came with the 97. the floor plate on it flips up and stuff. lar mags work great!

I use both the stock magazined and gen 2 pmags with zero issues, but i do have the issue with pushed in bullet into the case. Its because of the crappy norinco 5.56. 2 rounds in every 50 it seems. Zero issues with american eagle .223

Yea I did some testing and it seems that at least with my XCR pistol mags, the bullet misses the chamber and hits the sides. I'm actually in the KW area and go to the Elmira range. Would like to meet another Type 97 owner who knows more about the gun than I do. Shoot me a PM of when we might be able to arrange something :)

I was on gas setting 1. But I doubt that would matter because the problem seems to be a feeding issue. When I charge the rifle... That's when it messes up.

It's interesting because the nor info ammo works in all my other guns flawlessly. Unfortunately I don't have other brands of ammunition as I picked you the case of 1600rounds... You'd think a Norinco firearm would work with its own ammunition...

Ha, ya a guy would think. Like i said i had a similar issue but it didnt mangle the brass like yours is doing. Odd, i wouldnt rush to file anything. Same issue came up when i had two mags clipped togetjer, the added weight would cause the round to jam just under the feed ramp almost every time

Had same problem with first few rnds in LAR mag loaded to 10, no problem loaded to 5. XCR and factory mag worked fine.

Insert the mag with some dummy rounds and run the bolt ahead slowly. The round will be hitting below the feed ramp due to the mag seating too low in the mag well.
File the feed ramp downwards until the round is being guided upwards as the bolt is closed.
