hey guys, my type 97 mag release, when pressed, acts like it stuck (wont move at all), on the other side i see it tilts a bit and freezes. I think filing it a bit would work, seems oversized (not the button).

How does one remove the mag release?

It's doesn't unscrew like an AR mag release, there's not enough clearance. What you need is a pair of pliers that can fit into either side of the "slot" of the button, then unscrew it.

The magazine release retains the bolt hold-open, which falls out the middle hole behind the magwell, don't lose it!

thanks for the pic btw!

No problem! I took a pile of photos to explain the strip/assembly process for another site years ago, and they come in handy when explaining some of this rifle's peculiarities.

Absolutely yes, just be careful about it. Remove the bolt hold open, because it's fragile, then take a file to the "spine" of the magwell to widen it a bit - this is really the only part that's too tight. Check it with the mag you want to use every so often while filing. You don't want drop-free, just enough to insert and remove without undue effort.

I have had good results from putting the raised portion of the mag into a vice and tightening it a bit at a time. Remove the bottom of the mag along with the spring and follower first. Tighten only a small bit at a time and then try in the mag well. Repeat till it drops free. Be careful not to tighten it too much at a time or it will pop the spot weld. I just fixed 3 lar 15 mags this way and they all work well.
