I need some help identifying an old bayonet, and getting its approximate worth. It's not mine, but I told the owner I'd check it out.

I know from the broadarrow it's British, and the "47" probably means 1847, but beyond that I have no idea what gun it's for or how much its worth. Obviously the metal ring on the frog isn't original. Any help would be appreciated :)

Well, not quite. While it appears to be a martini bayonet, which martini is still up for grabs. Look at the long slot in the bushing, the one that the front sight slides in.
A 577-450 bayonet will wind up with the blade on the right side of the barrel while a .303 martini will have the blade hanging beneath the barrel.
But then it could also be a Snider bayonet or a P53 bayonet
Muzzle ring diameters;
P53 , 20.0 mm
Snider, same
MartiniHenry 18.3 mm
Martini-Enfield 16.5 mm (Pattern 1895 for .303)

Eh, like I said the bayonet isn't mine... I would like a Martini-Henry regardless, but I don't have the cash at the moment. Too much spending on Lee-Enfields. It's always something... :rolleyes::D

Maybe a smart decision, Once you bought the rifle, you would have to buy the brass (BLOODY EXPENSIVE)
The dies are not cheap either:eek:
Then there are the bullets, which ARE NOT .45 calibre but rather anywhere from .469 to .471. You will also have to learn how to paper patch them
The cartridge will require around two fibre wads and a beeswax wad.:D

OOPS, did I mention a bullet mould?

mine slugs out at .461 :D Tight :D and I just use 405grn bullets cast for the 45-70 a little loose but they have a gascheck. Dies and Brass came from Buffalo Arms, Jammison brass is good, but yes its a considerable investment after buying the rifle.

I don't have a bayonet :(
