hey all.

I'm trying to educate myself on AR's and i have a few questions.
how many different types of ar are there. i dont mean calibres or makes.

are all ar's considered carbines. or what.

Im looking to get an AR15 A4 16"-
i am going to keep it pretty well stock. what are some recommendations
as to which manufacturer is best.

thanks

jon

The AR family is pretty diverse, which is one of the nice things about it. You can build a rifle off one lower to suit any need. If you spend some time at ar15.com you'll get an overload of info. Most common carbine lengths are 10.5/11.5", 14.5" (M4), or 16". Then you also have mid-lengths, and rifles 20" or longer. The hard part is deciding what you want...you'll always want more :D .

How true pjnorth. I got a 16" last september since I could use it for service rifle shoot and still short enough for tactical shoots. After one tac competition, I thought of getting a 14" to make it easier to move about. But then, I started seeing 11 and 10 inches on the range and thought , hmm.... maybe I should also have an 11.5 inch for the cool factor. Then after attending Longshot's training last week, I thought a need a complete upper of about 20 or 24 just for service rifle, I NEED HELP !!!!! Don't get an AR-15, you'll be sucked into the dark side ;)

There should be a rule that states you have to send atleast 1000rds down range in either training or competition before spending so much as a 100 dollars on gucci kit or a second rifle;) :p

And you have to own it more then 3 months before "changing inventory".;) :D

SKBY.

If AR's ever become non-restricted again you'll want to have at least an 18.5" barrel :D - But until that day, go with whatever turns your crank :) It's all good

In regards to Manufacturer - I am delighted with my precious Rock River Arms Lower (20" Upper coming sometime this month).

Fired my friends Colt HBAR Sporter and have fallen in like with the type. I just ordered the RRA 20" Standard A4 Upper from Questar. I'm planning on aquiring an A2 lower here in Canada to avoid the copious amounts of paper and bureau-bums.

I just don't suffer ####ty parts and gear and will not justify crap because "I paid for it", had my Bushy M4 for over 15000 rounds now(1 year, will do that again this year), that's more than most do in a lifetime, watching Blackhawk Down with your AR is not actually shooting it. There are three types of AR users.

Type A: Needs it for work or the big show ie. KevinB, Reaper, Westie47
Type B: Serious target shooter competitor ie. Headamage, Rooster33, yours truely
Type:T,W,P,: TOOL collector who WISHES they could be type A or B but is content to POSE in front of the mirror or T.V. with his M4 and talk about joining up one day and going to the Sand Box.

Back to your regular program::D ;)

thats me, I am lucky to shoot 1000-1500 rnds a year out of my ar15...... no competitions within 8 hour drive and work for me requires a 375H&H or a 12 Guage when doing bear watch jobs :)

As to your question, I can say without a doubt that Bushmasters are the heat, I went through 13K I can accout for last year and a full 50 cal ammo can of loose rounds in addition, not to mention the hot gunned matches and range sessions, so 15k is conservative, not one gun related malfuntion. Colts are awesome too because their quality control is good, don't get hung up on cosmetics like matching uppers and lowers and finish machining, parts guns are OK too as long as they were built using quality parts and assembled with love. The problem with some parts guns is that guys use cheap or worn parts that have been reparked and resold, nothing but grief here. DPMS, RRA have good reputations, I am very excited about my up coming Stag though I may pass it to a customer as supply cannot keep up with demand on these. If I have not said it before in (My Personal Opinion) Dlask rifles SUCK! they will not pass the Would I test.
Would I trust my life to them
Would I trust my reputation to them
Would I trust them with this match
You are better off with a Norinco or Oly Arms, if I could only have one AR in Canada given the current climate it would be a 16" Mid-Length Armalite, why?
Great fit and finish, Great gas system, lots of spare parts and a Supplier (Wolverine) that is second to none. Wes, if you could you'd be a BADASS AR guy so you get honorary Type B status, can't help you with A, maybe Kevin will give you a note.;)

Ahem....

It looks like there might be a bit more room in the Type B category.:D

I was trying to maintain your grey man status, as for me a year off to sort out career doesn't count...I'll be back with a vengence and on someone else's dime too...:D

thanks but the only use I would be is if they could sew four lvl 4 vests together, 3 wide and 1.5 long and then I could be the tactical ninja bulletproof wall of death.... and my head is a 7 3/4 so finding a helmet sucks too. :) :) :)

maybe I could man the rear window of a suburban for him, block all bullets coming from the rear :)
