types of shotshell holders

I'm just curious, I've noticed while looking at pictures of other peoples shotgun/3gun belt they sometimes have two different types of shell carriers. the most common is a setup for quad/double loading but sometimes there is a box looking carrier that just has a few shells stacked inside. I was just wondering is there a reason for having both or using one over the other. just personal preference, stage strategy, strong hand/weak hand reloads?

OP: the only place I've seen those types of carriers (as also seen in Dexter's video) has been Brownells, and that took some looking. I didn't follow up because I got mad at them for not informing me they couldn't ship me another item, I presume because of ITAR and an overabundance of caution. But anyway, check Brownells and don't stop looking if they don't turn up right away, their search engine is unusually hit and miss (in my experience, which as I said is now old-ish). I think they have a better handle on ITAR than before- I know I do.

If the items are now available in Canada, I hope someone will post the info here.

I still recommend the shell belt over a loose bag of shells.

At least every shell is pointed in the same direction.

You can buy pouches that reliably line them all up, either in loops or loose in a confined space. They are great if you already have to wear a Batman utility belt to hold mags etc and don't have the waist space for a shotshell belt.
 
In regards to the shell caddie technique in the video;
One big advantage is that the gun is always in the firing position while loading.

With quad-loading; You need to dismount and remount the gun, which is an investment of time.

Loading 8 or 12 shells at once; Pretty much everyone is going to be faster with quad-loading.

But if you only needed to top up 3 or 4 shells to finish a stage; A caddie load might be faster for some people.
That's why you might see someone with both styles on their belt.

Yes. The shotgun pouch with loops is on par with the shell-belt.

They hold lots of shells, keep them all pointed in one direction, and don't cost a fortune.

Both options are a million times better than loose shells poured into a dump-pouch.

I've just done my first shotgun match and am gearing up for my next

These are what I'm looking at - do most people get the 8 round version? Is is bulky? Would 2 x fours be better or is it personal preference?

I'm thinking if getting the Invictus with ELS clips for easy fitting/removal but without seeing/handling them its hard to gauge size

I have the 8 shell China rip off of the invictus, they're only 4"x5", bought the width of a hand(and 1.5" wider than a tek-lok). I'd go for the 8 shell, they increase in height for each shell so you can get your fingers under them and with 2 4's the second caddy might be a bit low and offer interference if you put 2 4 shells side by side. Though I've never played with the 4 shell holder so that's a guess.

Example of the "increased height" for each shell, allows you to get fingers under the next set of shells without grabbing too many.

This is what I'm running now for a maxed out loadout. Two 086 and an IP 12 holder. Used to keep on of the ap 4x4s on my belt just in case I needed one or two extra shells. Actually needed to load from it in a shotgun match the other day and they are so painfully slow to load from I ordered the ip caddie the next day and threw the 4x4 on the shelf. Buy good caddies off the start and practice quad loading. No point even messing around with anything else, you'll just end up replacing them anyway.

Why two different types? Safariland for quad loads and IP for random singles if required?

I`m leaning towards the Safariland - looks like quality gear

The safariland are a slightly better caddie imo but as I don't need to go to the left very often I figured I'd save a bit of money and was able to get 12 in the same space as 8. My weak hand quads aren't nearly as fast as my strong hand quads yet but I will be working on that. Or if I don't have access to an hex key (For whatever reason) to adjust the safariland I can put slugs in the invictus caddie.
