Here's a new site that keeps track of U.S. ammo costs -- just in case you'd like to feel a little smug: http://www.gunbot.net/index.php?cal=223556 .

Holly ####, cheapest 7.62x39 is $359/1000

That is way up from last year. Thankfully they can't import "our" steel core, or Norinco ammo.

My cousin who lives in Texas was at the gun show in Austin over the weekend where the asking price for 500 rounds of .223 calibre was $559 and 500 rounds of 9 mm was priced at $199. Compare that with prices in Edmonton on Saturday where 500 rounds of .223 calibre could be purchased for $199 and 500 rounds of 9 mm for $135. Cabelas in Edmonton is reportedly telling customers that they will no longer be stocking pistol calibre ammo as they cannot keep their American stores in stock. Luckily we have still have access to the Eastern European military surplus as well as the Chinese ammo, but anything manufactured in the USA is going to be hard to find and inflated prices are going to be here soon.

the biggest sham in the US is at the Shooting ranges. The range fees are cheap....but the kicker is that you have to use their ammo. It is freaking expensive...much more that we pay up here. The cheapest ammo I found was at Walmart...WW 9mm 115gr. I have found the odd .223 ammo at a few places. I was in Maine a few years back and bought 2000rds at a better than normal price. It was a surplus store.
