Hey fellow gun men,

I am new to the hunting seen however been pistol shooting for 2 years now. lately ive been really drawn to the lever action cowboy style rifles and i did a little research on the Uberti Yellow boy 1886 Winchester replica.

So far i have gathered that its a beautiful firearm and one of the smoothest lever actions out there, and most rather die then sell there's. at this point i was pretty convinced that this was the rifle i was going to get.

and then came the decision on the caliber .45 colt , .44/40 , or .38 spl not much on choices, i also read that due to the fact that its a brass receiver i am limited to low pressure rounds so about 200-225 gr. which apparently is good for a deer at 50 yards with the round leaving the barrel at 650's lbs of force (correct me if im wrong) but is this sufficient or enough to do the job.

i know that there are probably way better rifles to use out there but if this can do the job then i would be happy with it.

your thoughts on this please and thank you.

They certainly are beautiful rifles for sure, I have a '60 '66 and a '73 all in 44-40. I don't think it is so much the brass that makes it low pressure, it has more to do with to weak toggle action. If I remember correctly you just have to keep the loads to under 13000 psi That being said you can still safely load the 44-40 to 1100 - 1200 fps which I think should be enough to put down a deer.

Ya I remember reading about that too keep the Sammi pressure below 14000 ya thanks buddy that's great news an one more in favor of me getting one.

Another question the 44-40 is that readily available ammo or is it a special order type of thing keeping in mind ill most likely require a low pressure load ( for lack of a better word) also is it classified as black powder under Canadian law even if its a cartridge load.

All the stuff you can buy factory will be low pressure and not black powder that you can shoot out of a Uberti. You can usually pick that stuff up at most gun shops but it will be expensive, at least a buck a round. Reloading is where it's at for the 44-40 and that goes for the 45 Colt as well.

I see we'll both me and my father in law are planning on grabbing them so between the both of us getting a reload station sounds like a good idea. If I'm Going to do it might as well go all the way lol thanks a lot for your help I appreciate it and thanks for making me excited about it again I was worried for a second

The 44-40 is good to a bit over 100 yards, if you use the standard factory load which moves out around 1,200 fps. I was planning on using my 44-40 Winchester M92 for deer this season, but my buddy's son will be using it. My M92 with the Winchester factory load has no appreciable recoil, and has a quiet report. My buddy's son likes shooting it, so we will keep his shots under 100 yards.

An 1886 in 44-40 would be a hoot of a hunting rifle. I'd say go for it and good hunting.

I'm buying it eventually, but i think ill settle for a cheaper lever action for my first hunting rifle. Its pricier then i first thought the Uberti but i bet its worth it.
