To my fellow gun nutz....I have a problem! Well it may be nice to have this problem but I shall share it with everyone. I am going to start saving up for a new moose gun here for possibly next spring. I just dont know which one to choose. Now we could go on for ages about calibre selctions but I will let you know where I stand. I at first thought about a 300Mag, but turned my thoughts to a .308 or a 30-06. Now for a gun I like the looks of the grey-laminated stainless types (I dont know why they look awesome to me), but of course I like anything new and shiny :D . I assume any RoT of 1:10 or 11 would be prefered for the 180 gr bullets??

So If I miss any other rifle configuration or if anyone has any comments on any rifle, any comments would be appreciated.

First Choice: Tikka Laminated Stainless

Second Choice: Remington LSS

Third: Savage Model 12 FV
http://savagearms.com/12fv.htm
Fourth: Maybe a Browing A-Bolt.....

Must be nice to be faced with this predicament eh?

Thanks a lot

Hi,

Go with the 06.

I own a SS Tikka T3 in 06 and i really love it. It often groups 1/2 @ 100 with A-max 155 58.5 gr H4350. It is also very light rifle but you should accept to live with some plastic on it.

I saw the Rem LSS last week and wow! this thing is all metal and wood. Wood is more heavy laquer shiny finished if you compare to T3. Magazne is all metal. The LSS looks like a rifle that will last. The action is also really smooth. The Remmy was feeling more heavy without scope than my T3 all dressed. Just hope the remmy shoot as good as the T3.

Your third choice is a Savage heavy barrel. I also have a Savage 11F but it's not a fine rifle like Rem or Tikka. It's just a very effective hunting tool. Also very accurate for a cheapy rifle.

Post pics of your new rifle.

heard a good Tikka T3 story tonite...

a friend sighted in a new stainless laminated T3 in 270 Win with a new Leo 3.5-10 on top for a friend today....with cheap factory ammo it never fired a 3 shot group over 3/4" at 100 meters........Remington 150gr CoreLoct's shot a 1/2" group.....those Tikkas will shoot.....don't know what those Finns are up to over there but they are doing it right....I know it isn't those hammer forged Sako barrels...

I really love remmies - but in all honesty for the guns you showed, i'd go with the tikka in 30-06. Slightly shorter barrel which won't make a diggity darn difference to velocity you'd notice, but an inch and change less barrel and it weighs less too - i'd say that's your gun. the 30-06 is plenty for moose and then some - there's all kinds of premium loads that are brutal on moose and if you load yourself you can really tweak it.

I'd opt for the Tikka. If you're not too recoil-shy don't throw the 300WM or WSM off of your list.

Disclaimer: While I prefer the 300 "mags", the '06 or the 308 will do the job 99.999% of the time - provided you do your part.

Ditto on the Tikka T-3... superior rifle in all categories.
If you work the bolts on all three of your choices in succession you would be amazed at how much smoother the bolt is on the T-3!. The Tikka trigger is much better as well.

I vote for TIKKA also! I have 2 T3 Laminate Stainless in 270WSM -sweet shooting rifles. Mine love the Accubond bullets. Here are a few pics of mine to convince you Tikka! The wife took over the first one in fall of 2004 (silver VX3 Leupold 3.5-10x40 with BC reticle), so I bought another that XMAS for me that was on hold (matte Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 BC reticle) I suggest to use the Tikka/Sako Optilock Rings & Bases for your rifle. A bit pricey, but worth it. My Sako m75SS 300WM has not lost its zero in 9 years (Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40)

If you are really going to save some cash- go for the SAKO GREYWOLF. If not, get the Tikka, and put the extra cash into a good scope.

Well you have probably heard this enough but here it goes again :D; Go with the tikka. It sounds like you have allready made a good decision (except for getting it next Spring ;))

I have a Tikka T3 in 308 and I have an BDLSS DM in 30:06. While the Rem is a good hunting gun for sure, the Tikka is out of this world for accuracy. I defy anyone to find a better out-of-box rifle for accuracy and for smoothness of actions.

I would really like to get it now but the whole going to college again in the fall (maybe still waiting for that job!!!) kinda has a lot of my money tied up, but it could be an early xmas present

How much money do you want to spend for the rifle and a scope? Epp's lists the Tikka starting at $769. A Remington LSS in .300wsm at $969. It'd likely be about the same for a .308/.30-06. And a recently sold a 12FVSS listed at $869. All with with no scope. Add $300 plus for the scope and mounts, plus taxes and you're looking at a grand or so.
Mighty Peace, please reduce the size of your pictures. A dial up member will be loading this page until next week.

I figure the gun which should run around $1000 - Laminated/Stainless and a bushnell 4200 2.5-10*40 in silver with good rings so theres what $650? Can you say graduation present! :D
