Hi All,

I just purchased a Lyman Turbo Sonic 2500 from a fellow CGN'r....
Does anybody have any home-made recipes to use....

I noticed that Lyman's sells a separate formula for brass vs gun cleaning...

Who knows, if we get enough tips *sticky maybe*
 
This should definitely be a sticky. Mods? I have found a recipe using either powdered pure citric acid (pharmacy stuff), or a three acid blend (wine making store) and a good squirt of Dawn dish soap works best. I use 1tsp of the acid for 50 brass, 2x 8 minute cycles. I also hand dry the outside of each piece right after, but am going to dry rinsing in 100% alcohol for quicker dry time and no spotting.

:agree:. I use Lemishine though which I think is citric acid anyways.
 
About 25% vinegar and a few drops of Dawn, followed by a hot water/distilled rinse works for me. But I tumble for 1/2 an hour after they're dry to make 'em nice and shiny with no spotting or tarnish.
 
I use the clean and shiny method on the link you provided but use the Hornady cleaning solution instead of the BC stuff he uses. I usually run the vinegar and cleaner for longer than he suggests.
 
I use a modified process from the one described on 6mmbr.com. The 50% vinegar 50% water solution with a squirt of dish soap works fine, but I run the cases in the ultrasonic cleaner with only that mixture. My well water is alkaline so I will simply dump the cleaned cases into a container of water for a few minutes to neutralize the solution.

Don't use a strong solution of vinegar as the acid (any acid) will separate the metal alloy(remove the zinc) on the surface, leaving the orange coloured copper.
 
For my gun parts, I use a few tablespoons of Simple Green, and hot water (my sonic cleaner has a heater to keep it hot). For really messy parts, I'll increase the Simple Green. After the cycle is complete, I remote the basket with all the parts by the handles, and move to my stove to dip it into a pot a boiling water for 5-10 seconds. Then the parts are put on paper towel to dry, and because of the boiling water, they dry almost instantly.

Then I oil/lube as needed, and reassemble.

Wow good stuff... I like the "home brew" options although I do happen to have a can of one shot lying around.... Does anybody change their recipe for gun parts cleaning? As I mentioned before it seems that Lyman's has two distinct formulas, one for brass the other for aluminum/steel. So far the internet has revealed home brews for brass, but I haven't found any for other metals.....

Also do all/any of you bother to tumble after? I heard a few of you take this step.... or should I lose the tumbler altogether?

Bonus points for a safe recipe for gems and jewelry as I then can justify this purchase as "non gun related" to my gun hating wife..... I know I'm whipped but shes pretty cute!!!

I dont tumblr. I just rinse mine with HOT water and lemishine then shake dry and dry the outside with a towel then let em sit in the reloading block to dry. They end up looking like brand new brass.
 
I tried lemon juice and dish soap and it worked, but not as good as I had hoped. I currently use the lyman solution, but will be trying other recipes as I hate paying big bucks for stuff like that.

I don't tumble after either, I used to just rinse in hot water and lay out on towels, but recently started drying a litte by running a towel over the outside of the case to get rid of the ugly tarnish and spots. It was embarassing having one f the RO's come up to me and jokingly say "ah reloading I see, maybe next time you can skip the antiquing step on your cases and bring some shiny ones". ;)
