Howdy,

I recently picked up a Mossberg 500 Flex Turkey from the Wholesale Sports closing down sale. The price was right and the paint job + fiber optic sights were a bonus as I was planning to build a shotgun with those features anyways.

After putting 400 rounds through the gun I have decided the Flex system sucks and I'd like to Un-flex the gun. Most notably the fore end is very loose and wobbly with a significant amount of play. This is rather annoying! The stock has a slight amount of wiggle between it and the receiver, but overall the tolerances are a lot better.

I'm wondering if any of you have come to the same conclusion and have replaced the fore end and stock on your flex with a aftermarket system like the Magpul SGA?
I've done a fair amount of digging around on the internet but no one seems to have made a post about this.

From what I can gather replacing the fore end with a stock non flex 500 fore end is easy, so going with the magpul furniture should work... One critical consideration seems to be the bolt that attaches the stock to the receiver. On a normal 500 the bolt is about a 1/4'' longer with a standard head. On the 500 flex the bolt is shorter and the head is low profile. Do any of you know if the bolt from the flex 500 will work with an aftermarket stock such as the Magpul SGA or will I have to go about finding a longer bolt.

Any help or pointers is much appreciated!

I once briefly owned a Mossberg 500A. I say briefly because the gun was great in every way but one, which drove me nuts.....the forearm and action bars wobbled all over the place! I've held a couple others since and they all had that issue. Might be something to just accept if you like most of the other features.

Mossberg 500 forends rattle. The barrel is thicker where the forend is in the fully rearward position. It doesn't rattle at all there. Then when the forend is all the way forward the barrel is thinner so the forend rattles. The flex system might add a bit more rattle because it's a seperate piece. But the stock slide action assembly will still rattle. Never felt a 590 but I bet they are the same.

Some good news.

The bolt in the stock is a regular 5/16-18 thread.

Available pretty much anywhere bolts are sold.

As mentioned all Mossberg 500 will rattle. When shooting any of my shotguns, I don't seem to twist the forearm side to side much. I tend to pull back slightly on the forearm so when I shoot, the action opens and ejects the spent shell. The only time I notice the rattle is when I'm sitting at home twisting the forearm laterally side to side. Not a big deal.
Of all my shotguns that I own or have owned, the Mossberg is still my favourite, rattle and all.

Thanks to all of you that replied! The info about the bolt thread is particularly useful! Thanks Dexter.

Having not shot many other shotguns I'm a little bummed to hear it's a Mossberg thing. My good friend has a Benelli Nova which I've shot a lot. The foreend is rock steady on it which is what I was comparing my 500 to. That said I do prefer the 500, rattle and all I'm very fond of this gun.

I'm hoping to order a new stock sometime in February and convert it then. Pics will follow.

I obviously haven't shot every Benelli Nova, but I've shot a few and their foreends all rattled as much as my 500 did. Sometime's you just notice little things more on your own guns than you do other people's.
